The greatest hoax perpetrated on the public,,,,,,,,,,, there must be more. 1) June 26, 1976, Tokyo, Japan,,,,,,,'The War of the Worlds',,,,,,,,, ..Muhammad Ali vs Antonio Inoki * Later renamed,,,,,'The Debacle of the Decade' * Bob Arum Promotion 2) May 25, 1965, Lewiston, Maine,,,, 'The Phantom Punch' ..Muhammad Ali vs. Sonny Liston * Later renamed,,,,,'The Worst Mess in the History of Sports' * A MOB Promotion 3) April 26, 1975, Toronto, Canada,,, 'George Foreman vs. The Toronto Five' ..George Foreman fights 5 (3) round fights vs. '5' punching bags * Later renamed,,, 'George Foreman versus the Frightful Five' * Don King Promotion
Foreman vs. the five wasn't a hoax, believe me, it was no easy task for George. Ali - Liston II will be forever debated.
I remember watching this 5-man circus...this travesty on Wide World back then...hard to believe that this is the same lovable, bald, smiling George Foreman that everyone is so familiar with...because of those grills.
I agree I think it is actually pretty cool Foreman did that. It's exciting, and it stays in the realm of boxing. No matter how bad the competition, it's nioce to be able to say you fought and beat five people in one night. He did pretty good I thought.
Ridiculous Bowe versus coke zombie Michael Dokes was a sham... But the crown goes to the hype surrounding... Joe Savage.
Biggest hoax? I seem to remember Ring Magazine once wanting to crown a champion in a tournament to try to restore some credibility in boxing. Later it was discovered that the editor had been bribed and then forced to resign. I'm quite sure I havent got everything correct in the above, but Ring Magazine sank to an all-time low. I think the editor was Nat Loubet.
Here's a piece from TIME. What a disgrace: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,918922,00.html
Looks like we can add several of these to the list. Sean O'Grady and his 5-fight deal with NBC, in Oklahoma City. Protecting him in his bout with Shig Fukiyama.
 This was not a hoax. A punch landed, and legitimately put Sonny down. You can argue that he packed it in, didn't want any more, had been waiting to take the first good punch that came his way on the chin to give him an opportunity to dive on mob orders...whatever. Clay was not "in" on anything, and he knocked Sonny down very legitimately with a very clearly visible punch about which nothing was "phantom".
World International Butt, Sam Michael, the 'live gate' promoter from Lewiston, Maine, 'couldn't give tickets away for this sham'
Oh, boy. Mercifully, we will not go around again with this topic. :!: Yes, Don King's U.S. Boxing Championship Tournament was a huge hoax, a terrible black eye for boxing and ABC-TV. Speaking of King, many fighters would say he was a walking, talking hoax if ever there was one. And promotor Harold Smith and his cash-laden briefcases certainly turned out to be a mirage as well.
