What are your top 5? Side Question, where does Povetkin come in? Mine (in no order) Sam Langford Jack Sharkey Jerry Quarry Rex Layne David Tua
My top 10 in no order: Ike Ibeabuchi Harry Wills Tom Sharkey Sam Langford Rex Layne David Tua Cleveland Williams Archie Moore Jerry Quarry Young Stribling Loughran and Lyle barely missed out
Quarry Archie Moore Byrd (never Lineal so I’m including him) Jimmy Young (wins over Foreman Lyle drew w Shavers lost a close one w Norton and should have beat Ali he often gets ignored maybe for his boring style and fighting to long Langford Not sure where POV would rank as I consider this an odd era the last 15 years.
Some of the better ones in no particular order: A Moore, Wills, Ibeabuchi, Young, Quarry, Povetkin, Tua, C Williams, Lyle, Bugner, Langford, Chuvalo, Uzcudun, Farr, Loughran.
McVey started a thread not too long ago called your 30 greatest heavyweight contenders, which was way cool. Check it out. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/your-30-top-all-time-heavyweight-contenders.624681/
I would also throw in Fred Fulton, Johny Risko, Lou Nova, Elmer Ray, Clarence Henry, Tim Witherspoon.
I believe Carl Williams was one of the best heavyweights to not win a world title. His resume isn't that great but he was a very good boxer.
I don't buy Risko or Nova. Based off what? And Fulton is problematic. He's a poor man's Cooney at best.
