fred apostoli has to be up there. there is a few italians out there that used other names like johny wilson. fireman jim flynn. midget wolgast and doug dewitt. joe grim was italian. I read on a thread joe jeanette was part italian!
The Roman nose... the jewelery... his pizza grip... the unnecessarily pink ski suit... it's so obvious now.
Just an incredibly gifted little featherweight champ whom even the great Benny Leonard couldn't figure out. They fought several times, each winning some and losing some, but always close bouts. When you consider that Leonard utterly destroyed the other great featherweight champ of the era, Johnny Kilbane, that says a lot. The "Scotch Wop" had an astounding record of over 300 bouts. In addition to beating the outstanding featherweights of his day- men such as George KO Chaney, Willie Jackson, Johnny Ray and Eugene Criqui- he also beat(numerous times in some cases) top lightweights such as Leonard, Rocky Kansas, Leach Cross, Charley White, Pal Moore, Mexican Joe Rivers, Richie Mitchell, Ever Hammer, Joe Welling, Jimmy Goodrich, Joe Shugrue(who knocked out Leonard) and others. An amazing little fighter.
Apostoli was one of the great might have beens of the ring. He was mis-managed into some bad ruination beatings from Steele and Conn or heda been a possible atg.
greta answere but in going with the rocky marciano quote that "jake lamotta was the greatest fighter he ever saw"this is coming from possibly the greatest ever(49-0) that stepped into the box.
Vito Antuofermo wasn't Italian American... he was just plain Italian. EDIT - Okay, he lived in America for his boxing career, but was born in Italy.
