I really love the jabs of Ali, Foster and Hearns among others. Foster's jab is absolute top tier. It's surprising no-one has mentioned Alexis Arguello yet given all the names thrown out. Arguello had a fantastic jab.
Virgil Hill- had a great career wirh just basically a jab and movement. Darius Michaleski- had a thudding jab- basically out jabbed Hill. Ike Quartey- incredibly powerful jab. Pernell Whitaker- see vs Azumha Nelson. Winky Wright- as Trinadad. Howard Winstone- damage to righthand made him refine his jab. Ken Buchanan- could double and triple it. Larry Holmes- greatest jab in my opinion. Even when he was way past his best jab was still formidable. Sonny Liston- knocked people down with it. Thomas Hearns- beautiful jab- could use it as offensive or defensive. Tommy Loughran
I reckon Whitaker may have had the best, most versatile jab I have seen. He was a genius with it. He could jab while moving in any direction and he was great with all the variations. Up jab, double jab, power jab, jab to the body etc. He was great at using the jab as a counter punch as well as using it to measure distance. Speaking of southpaws Marvin Hagler had a wonderful jab in his prime, he could hurt you with it and cut a fighter to pieces with it. As mentioned earlier Winky Wright also had a fine jab. Howard Winstone, Johnny Famechon and Ken Buchanan all had wonderfully educated jabs and were personal faves of mine. One guy nobody mentions much for his jab is Sugar Ray Leonard, he had a wonderful jab. I reckon Bob Foster and or Thomas Hearns had the best long jab by a tall guy I have seen, both of them had extreme speed and power. Hearns out jabbed Virgil Hill with ease and Foster gave Ali problems with his jab.. As far as heavyweights go Ali , Holmes and Carl Williams stand out for mine. I reckon Ali had a more speed than Larry and could jab while moving better than Holmes but Larry had more stick on his jab and used it more consistently. Williams as stated earlier had a phenomenal jab. LONG, fast and accurate. Cheers All.
How about the Emile Griffith's "counter-jab"? It became one of his 'go to's' consistently with the rest of his arsenal. Granted not the best jabber but the HOF technician used it like no other fighter I've ever seen.
These are the best because they have 3 different kinds of jabs. They have a "power jab" like a GGG that lands like a cross and even if you block it is tough to counter because you arent able to hold your ground. They have the "flick jab" like Hearns that comes to you rapid fire and sets up the right hand They have the "up jab" like Larry Holmes that comes from the waist and is extremely hard to evade.
Oscar DelaHoya. I've never been a fan and don't care for him as a fighter but he had a real sweet jab. His left hand was nice but that jab was really his best weapon. Hector Camacho had a very effective right jab. He could jab off his movement and use it as both an offensive weapon as well as defensive . Felix Trinidad- if you stood and engaged Tito he has a ramrod jab that he brought up to the chin. Almost a backhanded uppercut. It packed power. Simon Brown- shotgun jab. He could put his opponent down with it.
Luis Rodriguez also had a great jab, along with a counter jab as you describe. In fact, alot of the older Cuban fighters also had it. Napoles, Kid Gavilan, Kid Chocolate etc.
Simon Brown is a very good mention. He's pretty unmentioned nowadays. On that note, Buddy McGirt had quite an educated left hand also.
