Calzaghe would have seriously injured, or killed fighters back in the 40 with the brutal refereeing around back then.

Before I start, yes, I am British, but I am not blinded by national pride., although no doubt I will be castigated for being a ‘Brit’.

The hate on this forum is unbelievable, for one poster to state ‘anyone knocked out by Calzaghe must be a ******’ shows the level that some people are at. Anyone stepping between the ropes deserves respect, because lets not forget people can be killed in this sport. Show a bit more maturity & respect.

Calzaghe could have no doubt improved his record by taking certain fights earlier, but aside from the jaundiced view that Jones, Hopkins, Lacey & Kessler are the only names of note on his record, there were a few others:

Byron Mitchell who had been involved in seven world title fights prior to losing by stoppage to Calzaghe, with wins over decent fighters such as Frankie Liles & Manny Siaca & a split decision loss to Sven Ottke three months before he fought Calzaghe.

Charles Brewer who had been involved in six world title fights before meeting Calzaghe, with wins over decent fighters such as Herol Graham (probably the best Brit never to win a world title) & Antoine Byrd. Lost two split decisions to Ottke.

Richie Woodhall involved in five world title fights before losing to Calzaghe by stoppage. Woodhall had wins over decent fighters a world title holders, Sugar Boy Malinga & Glenn Catley. Olympic medallist losing to Roy Jones Jr in the semi-finals.

Omar Sheika. No great shakes, but did beat Glen Johnson by majority decision in the fight before he was dominated & stopped by Calzaghe. He lost by UD to Markus Beyer for the WBC Super-Middleweight title nearly five years after losing to Calzaghe.

David Starie, not a great fighter, but held a good win over Clinton Woods for the Commonwealth title prior to losing a boring fight with Calzaghe. Fought Ottke & lost by very debatable UD to Ottke two years later & never fought again.

Robin Reid, involved in five world title fights prior to losing a very close decision to Calzaghe & two more afterwards. Beat decent fighters such as Henry Wharton, & won the title by stoppage in Italy. Olympic medallist in 1992.

Chris Eubank, was not at his peak by any stretch, but had been involved in 21 world title fights prior to meeting Calzaghe, winning eighteen, drawing one & losing two. Fought & beat quality fighters such as Benn, Watson, Sugar Boy Malinga, Rocchigiani, Wharton & Lindell Holmes.

Sakio Bika who has fought at a decent level for a while.

No doubt the resume could have been even better, but lets not pander to the view that Calzaghe was not a very good champion.

If you were to review B-Hop’s legacy there are a few gaps in this that are conveniently glossed over e.g. his draw for the title with Segundo Mercado (admittedly avenged in the rematch), No Contest with Robert Allen (again avenged in the rematch), two losses (very close) to Jermain Taylor & title defences against many average contenders e.g. Eastman, Allen x 3, Hakkar, Vanderpool, William Bo James etc.

I also believe B-Hop to be a great fighter, but no way does he blow Calzaghe away in four rounds a previously posted if they met at their peaks. In some ways Hopkins has matured like a good wine with the years as evidenced by his wins over the second coming that was Pavlik & Antonio Tarver. He was as close to his peak as Calzaghe was to his in their fight & beat Pavlik after the Calzaghe fight.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but as boxing fans lets appreciate great fighters & not deride them. What happens in the ring is what really matters, not what could or should have been, lets deal with the facts.

You only gave us 11 seconds of that. Was that deliberate or accidental?

PS. Joe Calzaghe 46-0 LEGEND :hi:

I do not like this (often used) logic. Anyone can get killed driving their car. Should they get respect for driving a car? They get paid to perform the sport that they like. They have nothing to complain about and should not be given extra respect just because they do what they do. I mean if i had the skills i would gladly make a 1.000.000 dollars to fight someone. They should hardly be given extra respect, cause what they do hardly help society. It is great entertainment though, but that is all it is.

Edit: Agreed with your post in general though.

That is probably why he had hands problems. Man he slaps a lot, he probably broke his fingers. What a garbage stoppage.

Some people are a little thick on here... look Hopkins is still fighting and winning, Calzaghe has been retired for a year or so - so who was nearer the end when they fought. Age is a ridiculous thing to judge a fighter on. Hopkins was not prime and nor was Calzaghe

Basically you are saying you love him simply because he's from your neck of the woods....
