Thanks for the clarification. Regardless, Gould was a real friend who took care of his charge, not the stereotypical use 'em and lose 'em type who sucked them dry then left 'em to shine shoes. That 10% deal he got for Braddock was one of the shrewdest bargains any manager has ever gotten for any fighter.
ya lets nitpick one fight out of haglers career, and forget how they made him into the greatest middleweight of all time and how they adjusted his style from slick counterpuncher to aggresive brawler as he got older and slower. Hagler was naturally right handed, they converted him to southpaw.
They adjusted his style? I think age did that. They must have treated him allright as he stayed with them but I think there are better trainers .Is it possible you are a teeny bit biased as you train at their gym?
No sweat Suze, hope you learn a few tricks there,it must be pretty nice having ex champs and good pros around you can watch ,and hopefully pick their brains.
Ya it is. I have my first exhibition the 28th, which Im excited for. I been progressing alot since training here, and hope to have my first amatuer fight sometime this summer.
One Guy I would like to recommend that always sounds like he has very good strategical advice is Teddy Atlas.
Wasn't it Yank Durham who trained Frazier from his fights with Quarry until the first Ali fight? I think he passed away somewhere after that.
Emmnauel Steward is living off his past successes with Lennox Lewis, Gerald Mcclean, and Tommy Hearns. If you're going to say Teddy Atlas is one of the best trainers of the past 20 years, I'd throw Mayweather sr into the hat also.
As a manager maybe, but Hagler's gameplan in his two biggest fights, Duran and Leonard was absolutely horrible. He could've knocked out Duran and won the Leonard fight with a better strategy. Okay, to be fair, the Hearns fight was also among the biggest fights of his career and that one went fine, though there wasn't much need for strategy there.
And rightfully so. Don't forget he polished a raw diamond in Michael Moorer, trained Holyfield to one of his greatest fights in the Bowe rematch and has made Wladimir Klitschko from someone who was written off to the clear #1 guy for quite some time now. I think he's better than Roach or Atlas.
He failed to help Cintron in his return bout with Margarito, and he also trainer Taylor for his knockout loss to Pavlik. His fighters are great before he trains them.
Just because he's a great trainer doesn't mean his fighters win all the time. Moorer was not great before he trained him. Same for Hearns. Lewis was good but improved a ton with his help. Same with Klitschko. McClellan wasn't great when he started working with him either.
