1. Roberto Duran 2. Muhammad Ali 3. Sugar Ray Leonard 4. Pernell Whitaker 5. Julio Cesar Chavez 6. Alexis Arguello 7. Carlos Monzon 8. Michael Spinks 9. Marvin Hagler 0. Roy Jones Jr Not really sure about this one, but the top 5 is a lock. Many might object to Spinks being that high or even on the list, but I think he achieved enough to be there or thereabouts. Hagler gets by on his consistency, Jones on his success at multiple weights and the level of ability he'd often display. What do you think? Your lists?
I think we have all got to come to terms with the fact that not only will Manny Pac be gatecrashing that list but itll be at the top..:think
Prime RoyJones beats any 160/68/75 pounder in the history of boxing, just imagine trying to find a sparring partner to even closely resemble Roy. Its funny how Chavez of all people somehow gets rated above the Super Natural Roy Jones.:-(
Who the hell did Jones beat to make him that superior H2H? Foster sparks him out at 175, Spinks knocks him out at 175, and Hagler outpoints him at 160. Looking flash ain't good enough in this game, you have to go out there and beat some serious foes. Jones did that, but not at 175 and above. He's top 40, let's not get carried away.
Spinks aint knocking Roy out at all and Hagler aint outpointing Roy in a fight, especially in a 12 round fight in which Roy always fought in his prime. Don't let classic enthusiast cloud your judgment, Roy loses to nobody from 160-175, there's simply no way to prepare for a fighter like Roy in those particular weight classes. And did you really ask "who the hell did Jones beat" ?? Roy was right "Yall Must've forgot!!!"
RJJ is 'p4p H2H champion' Seriously though Hopkins and Toney are not average middleweights and he dominated them, people critisize his 175 record but he wasnt just winning fights against cans, he was fighting all recognized contenders (excluding DM) and winning with ease! I beleive a lot can be said for how a fighters defends his title, he was making top 10 guys, title holders and former title holders look like mugs, this shows the talent Roy had at his very peak.
Because the cut off date is 1969, then yeah i'd say Duran is number one. You've got all of his greatness in there and it's hard to top, whereas you don't have Ali's 'first' career. You could make the argument for Duran at number one anyway, but i'm one of the few that reckon, if you consider everything Muhammad Ali did then you have something amazing. Still you could argue for Duran>Ali considering everything that both did. Just thought i'd express some thoughts.
Bret Hart was my favorite wrestler growing up, even when he turned heel and was on that anti-American angle. My thought exactly, like Roy said ''It's not that I don't fight nobody it's just that I make them look like nobodies". Yeah but in terms of high level wins, post 1969 Ali still might edge Duran.
I said who the hell did he beat to make him that superior. He doesn't beat every Light Heavy in history, the best god damn 175lbs he beat was named Antonio Tarver, and he lost in return bouts. For christ sake, you talk about classic enthusiasts, what about you? Jones was the best ever? He beat green Hopkins, and has great wins over Toney and Tarver. That qualifies him as the best ever? He didn't come close to fighting anyone of Spinks' class at 175. What spinks fights have you seen, or are you just churning out the same, "Roy beats him"? malarky?
Harding, Gonzalez, and the tripe in the 175lbs division when Jones reigned weren't world beaters. As I said, the best fighter he beat at the weight was Tarver and he struggled. Spinks knocks him out, and Foster does too, even more brutally than Johnson.
