snowy baker was a dead **** and deserves no recognition .

so as cheney was the only other to win a silver, he has to be the best...

    Great topic.

Depends how you rate success. I mean clearly Cheney has the best result with his silver medal but your arguement for Madigan is sound.

I have often said that James Swan was one of our best amatuers ever. Dual Olympian, medals at Commonwealth games, World Cup bronze medal, countless State, National and Oceania titles. I think he lost to future (and current) world champ Alex Arthur in the semis at the C Games in Malaysia. Went out in Sydney against a future feathweight world champ from Brazil, cant recall his name.

Can see your reasoning SALLYWINDER. Obviously only Cheney & Baker managed to make it through to the final.

But nobody other than Madigan ran into someone of the class of Clay, and by all reports he pushed Clay all the way. Perhaps if they'd been on opposite sides of the draw it might have made the best final.

Still, I respect your choice of Cheney. Spike certainly did us proud in 1988.

That's not exactly true. Athol McQueen from Kyogle decked Joe Frazier in Tokyo, 1964. He got stopped with about 40 secs to go in the final round.

Yep. Good get IPSWITCH. There was an article about McQueen the man who decked Frazier in FIST magazine a few months back. A good read & I think he's still around too.

i think Adam forsyth's name has to be mentioned as he was down right robbed in Athens. If i it wasnt for Olympic corruption Australia would have had it's 1st heavyweight medalist.
some say it ranks up there with RJJ/fenech but like them Adam is destined for professional glory!

Hopefully Forsyth can turn his Olympic disappointment into a positive in the pro ranks like Fenech did.

Read a book on Lance Armstrong, the cyclist. In it the author said that you simply cannot win a Tour De France without having had at least one major disappointment in your life. Reckoned that's where the character comes from.

Not sure how much effect the grudge Fenech carried from the Olympics had on his later pro career? But if you can believe the papers it was a factor.

A rough assessment of Snowy Baker indeed... He thoroughly deserved the gold medal in 1908.. Regadless of his traetment of Darcy... This question pertaints to the Olympic Games... nothing more.

Madigan remains our finest Olympic games representative, by far. And our finest amatuer.

olympic style boxing now favours poindexters! the slightly built interlect with good co-ordination who would never think of mixing it up instead get in and out and score the point (forget trying to hurt his apponant)
thats not what boxing is was meant to be!

Interesting viewpoint..... Boxing is a points game. Has been for 120 years mate. Based on the opinions of Sports writers, then a sole judge/referee... now days, a panel of 3 judges..... Olympic judging remains to be scrutinised..... No great step forward has been achieved without arguement, or disadvantage to the fighters...

the aim in boxing is to beat your apponant by KO or maim and stop him before the given rds, its fighting not chess.
If a KO cant be done a points win is the next option although now in amatuer boxing its become the only option which i feel takes aways from the real roots of what boxing is!
