Greatest Overachievers

Tommy Hearns should not be on that list. He was a 6 foot 1 welterweight, and he had a punch.

 

196osh is the worst kind of hater. Bringing up Taylor in this thread shows such a huge bias of hate that it's not even funny anymore. Taylor is not an over achiever, he did what was expected of him. You could call him an underachiever, but over-... no chance in hell.

I think Gatti is a great overachiever, what he accomplished despite his limited skills is outstanding, he's not the most gifted guy, but his heart and guts got him far.

if anything i would rate tommy hearns as an underachiever. i think he had unbelievable tools.

some overachievers that come to mind are james "buster" douglas, ray "boom boom" mancini, rocky marciano, bernard hopkins, and evander holyfield.

hatton.... in no disrespect. I think thats why so many ppl (myself included) cheer him, hes like an average guy who worked his way to the top. avg height, reach, ect.... he deserves every bit of credit he gets.

Bowe is one of these "could have/would have" guys but what has he actually done besides Holyfield? He was undisputed HW champ without doing anything of note besides Holyfield (and getting eggchecked by Golota :roll. That's hardly better than Buster Douglas so therefore he is an overachiever because he never showed this mythical talent and potential against top opposition.

I don't know about Gatti being an overachiever. He couldn't been better if he took boxing more seriously in his younger days. Maybe he wouldn't be so loved and popular (and well-paid), but in terms of wins in the ring, if he partied less and had more discipline in the ring to resist a brawl, he probably would've done better. He had pretty good athleticism, reflexes, legs, quick hands, good combos, power.

Johnny Nelson deserves a shout, although I think he had great boxing ability, he was no natural talent, take look at the losses on the record. Its amazing how many title defences he racked up.

 

Bowe's top win over hoylfiedl is still better than any win dempsey, joe louis, larry holmes have. I mean neither one of them beat a top 10 ATG. Riddick bowe has beaten about 5 or 6 other contenders, its not like he was a journeyman prior to holyfield.
