Gpater, have you ever seen Saad - Lopez # two? This should be one of the most famous fights in history-up there with hagler-hearns. There are few others that can match it for sheer violence and drama as well as a brutal ending. it is definitely a hall of fame fight yet all we see on ESB is talk of Leonard-benitez :-( By the way, what did you think of Mancini-Kim, the fight that changed the sport of boxing?
Gpater, I won't dissagree with your assessment of Leonard in the Hagler fight. The skills and combination punching were a thing of beauty, especially for the purists but for #1 at 160, there are a lot to choose from, most of them coming from Hagler himself (Hamsho 1, Minter) I like to bring up Hagler because he fought like a vicious animal, the kind I fantasize about. I did like the ring technician but to see the return of the old Hagler displaying his fierce demonic wrath upon Hearns in front of a worldwide audience was a dream come true for me. Robinson Lamotta is another good one, giving some idea of what the Robinson legend was about. A heavy hitting combination puncher able to take apart a heavier, slower opponent, eventually beating him into a shapeless mass of black and blue mush. :nut
It all depends on your own definition of greatness, so mine would go: Heavyweight: Louis/SchmelingII Cruiserweight: Holyfield/QawiI Light Heavyweight: Moore/DurelleI Super Middleweight: Calzaghe/Lacy Middleweight: Robinson/LaMottaVI Junior Middleweight: Hearns/Duran Welterweight: Leonard/HearnsI Junior Welterweight: Benitez/Cervantes Lightweight: Duran/DeJesusII Junior Lightweight: Chavez/MayweatherI Featherweight: Saddler/ElordeII Junior Featherweight: Gomez/Zarate Bantamweight: Zarate/Zamora Junior Bantamweight: Roman/LaciarIII Flyweight: Villa/Wilde Junor Flyweight: Carbajal/GonzalesI
Leonard was very good in that fight, that confirmed his greatness IMO. Robinson vs LaMotta is a very close second i just edge it as i think Hagler is better. But Robinson performs slightly better so it almost even No i havent seen it, i had it on DVD and was going to watch it tonight and i put it in the machine and it dosent work, im gutted. Mancini Kim was a great fight but a tradgedy a real shame. It caused the 12 round limit which i disagree with but thats in significant if it saves a boxers life
This is a solid list, one recent fight i think should be considered was Darchinyan-Mijares at 115. Vic dominated and KO'd a top 10 p4p fighter in a unification fight, pretty special performance if you ask me.
