Greatest Puerto Rican fighter

I voted for Benitez but I would have to say Ortiz is right there with him. I think Benitez looked better on film, fought just as many elite boxers as Ortiz, and while his record against them (lost to Leonard, Hearns) is not as impressive as Carlos'. He fought a better quality of fighter than Ortiz did. This is no knock on Ortiz because Flash, Loi, Buchanan, Ramos and Locche were great fighters. I just feel Duran, Cervantes, Palomino, Leonard, and Hearns were slightly better.

gomez and benitez are interchangeable both great fighters. i lean a bit more twards benitez given the early age at which he won his first world title, and who he beat to do it.

 

It's got to be Felix Trinidad.

sorry my Represenatative always showed up and was never embarrased in the ring thats how truly great he was Carlos Ortiz. Plain and simple.

 

What does fighting the best and losing handily count for really? Ortiz beat the best, including 6 Hall Of Famers in Elorde, Loi, Locche, Brown, Laguna, and Ramos. Benitez beat Cervantes, Palomino, and Duran. Also was not nearly as consistent.

It really is pathetic that the best fighter in this poll has the least amount of votes, just shows the quality of the General Forum for the most part.

 

If he carries on improving, he may one day be knocking on the door of the top four.

 

Sweet Pea, that is probably due to my lack of familiarity with Ortiz. I'll have to view some of his fights. His record is certainly impressive on paper and the fact that you are so sure of his superiority makes me want to do a little more research.

 

His record as is should give him the nod. On film, he was a more subtly skilled fighter that you'd have to view a few times to get. The fight with Buchanan on Youtube was the last of his career, and he was shot by that time, so it does him no justice. See if you can't get one of the Laguna fights or his fight with Locche, Elorde, etc. Based on resume, easily the best, on film, or in a head to head sense, he rates among the top 5 Lightweights as well for me.

 

I've always flet it was between Benitez or Gomez. At 122lbs Gomez was amazing he had it all one of the greatest punchers ever and Benitez beating Cervantes at 17 is one of the greatest feats in boxing history.
