We move on to voting for the best Round Five of all time. You can check the results of Round 1-4 voting on the master thread and nominate Rounds 6-15 here: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/let’s-create-the-perfect-fight-round-by-round.648592/ Ground rules: This fight is going the distance, so each nominated round has to go the full three minutes — so something like the 12th round of Chavez-Taylor I is not eligible. All weight divisions are eligible. And in rounds where the participants faced each other more than once, please specific which fight. Gloved era only. And importantly, this should be about the best rounds not the most historically significant. Voting will be set to stay open for three days. Here are the nominees: Antonio Avelar-Wilfredo Vasquez (fast forward to 14:20) This content is protected Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez II (watch from start) This content is protected Art Jimmerson-Lenny LaPaglia (fast forward to 17:00) This content is protected Marco Antonio Barrera-Erik Morales I (fast forward to 14:00) This content is protected Somsak Sithchatchawal-Mahyar Monshipour (fast forward to 24:50) This content is protected Carlos Ortiz-Battling Torres (fast forward to 22:50) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_nfr7lutskw Eder Jofre-Jose Medel I (fast forward to 12:28) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7in902zI7DM Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward I (fast forward to 17:30) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5n4A_0Znd50 Frank Fletcher-James Green (fast forward to 21:25) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lraBQ7p9ako Anthony Joshua vs. Wladimir Klitschko (watch from start) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RogJU2LTJuQ
Oh, man, I tackled this right away and to tell you the truth I'm exhausted after watching them. 10 fantastic rounds, not a dud in the bunch. And after much deliberation I go with Gatti-Ward. Just a solid 3 minutes of mayhem. This was followed very closely by Jofre-Medel, which may have taken it on my card, but lacked the sharpness of film that the newer bouts obviously possess. That bout was producing some precise bombs. Monshipour v SS was a revelation and Barrera-Morales was right there too, as was Avelar v Vasquez. #6 would be the uncanny bombs by Ortiz v Torres. The remaining 4 could take it on anyone else's ballot and wouldn't look out of place. Again, 10 great rounds of action, but I go with Gatti v Ward.
Great series this and another bunch of great rounds to enjoy! I'll be posting my list (again in reverse order) asap!
A bumper stash of rounds to review this time and a really tough pick to choose just one. Any of my top 3 could have taken it but I went for the one that combined momentum shifts, sustained action and knockdowns all in one round. Plus, my two runners up are both in contention for round 9 and those rounds are probably better than these ones, good as they are. Here they are in reverse order from least favourite to favourite: 10. Jimmerson-LaPaglia Good round but a little one sided (LaPaglia doing his best Tommy Morrison impression with his hands down at his sides with Jimmerson keeps knocking his head left to right and back again) 9. Joshua-Klitschko (Started brilliantly but got a bit too scrappy to be a contender) 8. Fletcher-Green (Continuous close range action - very good but not as compelling as some of the others) 7. Vasquez-Marquez 2 (High quality stuff from both fighters, just not as dramatic as some of the ones I've put above it) 6. Monshipour-Sithchatchawal (Relentless from Monshipour but Sithchatchawal came back well. Just lacking in a bit of punch variety) 5. Ortiz-Torres (Top class action - hadn't seen this before but will be watching the full fight now!) 4. Morales-Barrera 1 (Classic round from a classic fight) 3. Jofre-Medel 1 (Tremendous high quality back and forth action fought at a fast pace. Brilliant stuff) 2. Ward-Gatti 1 (Somewhat overlooked because of round 9 of the same fight but this is almost as good. Back and forth action with Gatti having Ward seemingly in trouble before Ward hits back hard) 1. Avelar-Vasquez (This one had everything. The opening minute or so had the drama of the KDs and then they just went mental for the next minute or so before they punched themselves out)
Off the top of my head, I say Vasquez vs Avelar, but I'll refrain from voting until I rewatch later today.
Top class stuff from every selection, but I could never vote against Barerra-Morales. High quality boxing, vicious punching, and two guys who wanted to fight.
I think this is our best set of nominees so far. There’s four or five (or more maybe) that could win a lot of other rounds and they’re all stacked in the fifth. I had to go with Avelar-Vazquez but Jofre-Medel and Ward-Gatti were razor close, and the next tier has very little dropoff. I urge everyone to watch each of these classics and vote.
This content is protected Two flush counter-punches in the first minute or so, both men then go at it like animals, mindless action where both throw and eat at least 50 punches each. Absolutely savage round. Some of the finest action I've ever seen, and whilst both are hurt the momentum swings time and time again. Might even be my pick for best round ever... This content is protected By no means a bad round, but it wasn't fought with the same ferocity that the 'better' ones did. It also didn't have the same type of momentum shifts or drama. This content is protected Again, not a bad round as it was very dramatic, but it was very one-sided. LaPaglia played tough-guy more than he actually fought, and I think this was more a beating than a war. Crushing body shots here. This content is protected Amazing action, classic fight between two ATGs. What's not to love? I thought it was definitely up there as far as action goes, but these two didn't have the same effect on eachother that the ones above did. It also didn't have the same drama imo. This content is protected Not as intense/ferocious as Morales vs Barrera, but this one had more drama. Both men were hurt here (although neither down) and the body shots were absolutely brutal. This content is protected Awesome round; I hadn't seen it before. I liked the skills shown in it, and both men looked to swap control and land flush. Not the most exciting here imo, but an excellent round nontheless. This content is protected Absolutely brilliant round. Just like the last, it's an ATG facing off with a worthy challenger, but the difference being that this one was fought at an even higher pace, with a higher skillset and had much more drama. Awesome round. This content is protected Awesome action here, both men looking staggered and flurries galore! Ward going both upstairs and down with startling success. Whereas Gatti flirted in and out, coming and brawling. However, it's definitely not as good as Round 9. This content is protected Not the best imo - far from it. It wasn't bad, but it didn't have the intensity that a Fletcher fight ought to, and the action wasn't that hectic anyway. This content is protected Not one of my favourites, Joshua beats him up during a fast start, then he gassed out and then they throw shots at slow rate, neither landing much in-between bouts of holding. So, in the end, my rankings are: #10. Jimmerson vs LaPaglia #9. Fletcher vs Green #8. Ortiz vs Torres #7. Joshua vs Klitschko #6. Vásquez vs Márquez II #5. Sithchatchawal vs Monshipour #4. Gatti vs Ward I #3. Jofre vs Medel I #2. Morales vs Barrera I #1. Avelar vs Vásquez Jeez, something about the number 5 makes guys wanna put on a show! This was really fun, bit genuinely hard. Cheers, Pat!
Yeah I think the middle rounds are (mostly) where it’s at as far as having the best multiple candidates. The early rounds in most fights, even great ones, are more feeling out and figuring out. The late rounds they’re naturally probably more tired plus if one fighter is superior he has probably begun to assert it so the razor-close, back-and-forth action is less ... although if it’s a close, competitive fight then both are probably putting their feet on the gas to finish strong and win. The middle rounds both are more often still fresh enough to bring it, have figured out what’s going to work against the opponent and not conserving themselves. Also, I could watch 100,000 rounds of Ward-Gatti.
A reminder that: 1) There’s a lot of great stuff to look at if you can spare 3 minutes per round 2) Voting is ongoing
This one’s going to the final bell, folks. Still up for grabs. Voting ends tonight so please give ‘em a look at pick the best.
