We move on to voting for the best Round Six of all time. You can check the results of Round 1-5 voting on the master thread and nominate Rounds 7-15 here: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/let’s-create-the-perfect-fight-round-by-round.648592/ Ground rules: This fight is going the distance, so each nominated round has to go the full three minutes — so something like the 12th round of Chavez-Taylor I is not eligible. All weight divisions are eligible. And in rounds where the participants faced each other more than once, please specific which fight. Gloved era only. And importantly, this should be about the best rounds not the most historically significant. Voting will be set to stay open for three days. Here are the nominees: Rocky Marciano-Archie Moore (fast forward to 22:12) This content is protected Marco Antonio Barrera-Kennedy McKinney (fast forward to 29:05) This content is protected Marvin Hagler-John Mugabi (fast forward to 23:48) This content is protected Mike Rossman-Jerry Quarry III (fast forward to 21:05) This content is protected Victor Ortiz-Andre Berto (fast forward to 31:10) This content is protected Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns I (fast forward to 21:40) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yGLL0itOAe8
I mean, I get that Zale-Graziano 1 and 2 would be in contention if the film was available so that's probably why nobody has nominated them. Not sure how many times @Saintpat has to explain the basic rules of this thread but everyone can nominate a round until the previous round's voting has closed and the next round thread is created. The choices here are all based on people's nominations so everyone is free to nominate - it's just that only a few of us have been taking the time to do it. Rounds 7-15 are still wide open for nominations. So there's no point grumbling or questioning the selections when you don't see a round you would have liked to nominate... because you didn't bother to nominate it.
So why didn’t you nominate some more well-known ones? This is not: “Saintpat is going to list all the good rounds and you get to vote,” this is “Classic Forum has been invited and implored to nominate those rounds and vote.”
This content is protected Absolutely Pandemonium, two KDs and 3 minutes of vicious action. Personally, I thought it was too one-sided but still an amazing round. Probably not my first choice (although it could be) despite being the round I nominated. This content is protected Transcripts have been printed about this fight. It's a classic. I like this round, one of the best here, but not as much drama as the better imo. This content is protected These man went at it like Rock 'em, Sock 'em Robots! One-sided; sure, but both men were throwing plenty of leather, and just like Barrera-McKinney, this is a classic. Not as much drama as my #1 though, still brilliant. This content is protected Didn't even know these two fought (although it's Mike, not Jerry ). Fun infighting at a high pace, not much drama, not too high an intensity level, but a damn good round. This content is protected Awesome round. Steady action at the start, then after about a minute and a half, Berto lands a perfect counter. Ortiz down, taking a Berto barrage and eventually fights back hard, scoring his own KD. Ortiz jumps on him with a few seconds left. This content is protected Iconic round, but probably my least favourite one here. Hearns boxing, Leonard stalking. BOOM! Hearns hurt, after that it's more or less one-way traffic. _______________________ Despite there being some amazing rounds here, this one pales in comparison to the set we had in the 5th. My rankings of these are (probably): #6. Leonard-Hearns I #5. Barrera-McKinney #4. Quarry-Rossman III #3. Hagler-Mugabi* #2. Marciano-Moore #1. Ortiz-Berto *I'd probably slip Bradley-Provodnikov in around here too. I think my favourite part of these threads (aside from, y'know, seeing new rounds....) is that I really feel like I can find the criteria for my ideal of a 'perfect' round. Oh, and sorry if I seem a bit down on all of these. I'm just in a pessimistic mood, I guess.
It’s not as good a batch. Maybe all the fighters were catching their breath from those Round 5 classics, haha. Surprised you didn’t know the Mikes (Quarry and Rossman) fought — this was the third installment of their trilogy. I went back and forth and ultimately settled on Barrera-McKinney because of the combination of sustained action and skill level. As of this moment we have four votes spread across four different rounds. This is going to be interesting.
I knew they fought, but I'd never seen them or assumed they'd be good fights. I don't think there's a real wrong answer here, but I'm looking forward to seeing how Akira vs Pornaswan does in the next round. I think it should win, but I doubt it will.
For all his flaws overall, during that fight with Berto, Victor Ortiz on fire. One of the great examples of 'flow state' or being 'in the zone'
Please utilize the link at the top of the page to the main thread and by all means make nominations for the remaining rounds. I did not make a list and ask people to vote for their best round. I posted a thread some weeks ago that has spent a lot of time on the front page asking for nominations. And in each round’s individual voting thread I’ve asked people to go to the main thread and make nominations. If some round isn’t nominated and you wish it had been, please go nominate some rounds.
I always watch the bouts, then vote, then add in my two cents before reading what everyone has said. Maybe its my way of not being influenced. So this is how I saw it. Firstly, every single bout had its attributes and showed itself to be a great round, but IMO, only two of them displayed 3 solid minutes of action and that was Barrera-McKinney and Hagler-Mugabi. And in the end, I voted Hagler-Mugabi by a hair. Just great back and forth action. I will also say I loved the clean, crisp punching of Rossman-Quarry and the drama of Berto-Ortiz. There was also drama in Marciano-Moore and Leonard-Hearns, but nothing like Hagler-Mugabi.
