Fourie was an excellent fighter. How could I forget him? 52-7 is a very good record, and if irc he had brittle hands, which explains his paltry 10 KO's. If he'd had a bit of a punch he might have been arguably the top 3 SA talents. As it was he failed against the very best, but losing narrowly to guys like Galindez and Foster (both twice) is nothing to be ashamed about.
Out of the ring issues. Substance abuse issues, along with issues making weight and with general commitment. I think that's what happened anyway.
I saw him go past me once on the road with a sponsor emblazoned car He went a bit off the rails with the drinking and party life if I understand it correctly. Then his promoter and trainer had enough and dumped him. The area I live in is notorious for hard-drinking, aggressive folk and sometimes these guys can't shake their roots. I hope he comes right. Would be nice to have a champ from the East Rand again.
Seeing him at 168 was almost painful. I did a little googling and found out he pulled out of a title fight with Brahmer and was labeled "a druggie and alcoholic who is beyond any help" by his (ex) promoter.
I've heard he often did just enough to win fights at time, lacked an authoritative stamp, seemingly being stuck in one gear or unable to transition through them at times. Is there any truth to that? Haven't watched much of the man honestly.
I think he is overrated because his overall competition was medicore - but he could box very well. Of course it was never proven he could do it against consistently elite competition. But, based on longevity and a long reign, I think he's the best South African fighter I've seen.
Sounds like a big fish in a little pond. Thanks for the info, Saad. How've you been lately, sir? Watch any good fights as of late?
Du plooy had tremendous power, regardless of his training habits or lack of them. You can tell he's in that upper echelon of heavyweight power just by watching him for a few minutes. This content is protected
