Who the greatest heavyweight southpaw in boxing history? The main names that spring to mind for me are Michael Moorer, Chris Byrd, and of course Oleksandr Usyk. Other guys like Corrie Sanders were also excellent fighters on their day. Ibragimov and Chagaev were also solid southpaws. Who else should be considered in this thread?
Like listed as southpaw, or able to switch? Because, there's an obvious name to throw into the hat, from the current crop
I was thinking more pure southpaws. Are you referring to Tyson Fury? If he’s included here he goes right at the top, unless Usyk beats him.
Probably Usyk. I respect what Byrd did but I just can’t imagine Byrd outpointing a top heavy like Joshua in such impressive fashion.
I doubt this, Usyk would outbox him that way. I think Fury will manly fight orthodox and look to smother Usyk. I back him to win but I doubt Fury would beat Usyk fighting mainly from the southpaw stance.
Byrd. Beat Tua, Old Holy, draw with Golota. Win on an injury over Vitali. Fought lot of tough competition. Lot of good ones over the last 25 years.
It gives him a better attack angle, his jab wouldnt be completely nullified by usyks lead hand and the distance he needs to close to smother and maul usyk is cut in half. Its actually a great idea i just dont know if he has the confidence to use it. He usually switches right back after about a minute.
I always thought Fury boxed southpaw to get the southpaw vs orthodox angle for distance. I will be genuinely surprised if he switches in this fight.
He does, against plodders. However when he himself boxes orthodox against southpaws his snapping jab from a low angle just harmlessly slaps against the opponents lead hand and he has to reach in for his own right hand, leaving his tall clumsy(when attacking) frame susceptible to counters. For whatever reason fury seems to have excellent defensive timing, reflexes and agility but looks woefully clumsy on the front foot. Even against Wilder who is clumsy himself 9/10 shots landing were cuffing/misstimed. Against Wlad it was even worse. When he does actually land clean and crisp a la Tommy Hearns/Lennox Lewis obviously his shots have an impact but hes going to have to nonstop maul against usyk. He is far too offensively clumsy to box him center ring as an Orthodox.
I will not count Usyk because his career is still going on. Chris Byrd has the best resume of the southpaws IMHO.
What are Furys best wins fighting solely southpaw? He's clearly effective switching but is he truly ambidextrous like he's previously claimed and if he'd fought solely southpaw his whole career would he be at the top of this list, have we seen enough of him fighting southpaw in his best wins to say that? In answer to your thread what about Ortiz, if he'd started his pro career much earlier and not when he was 30 I think he'd very much in the argument for best southpaw.
