You are certainly right that Hearns didn’t know about holding. And I consider Crawford an outstanding fighter . He would a chance against Hearns, but I think Tommy would likely win. Remember, I did say that the list would take both accomplishments and H2H into consideration. I suppose that it is up to the individual to determine how much weight to assign to either factor.—-Mark
In terms of greatness, I agree he didn't do enough at WW. But Flash's list was about H2H. I highly doubt all those guys he has on his list beat him at WW. In fact, my money's on Mayweather against most of the guys on his list.
I give accomplishment roughly about 60% weight and 40% to H2H . Others may apply a different ratio. Being an undisputed welterweight champion should be part of the equation, in terms of accomplishment. Like Mayweather, Hearns wasn’t undisputed, but was a nightmare matchup for nearly all the greats, Listen, I love Floyd’s skills. And he is a greater fighter than Hearns. But he would have no realistic chance against Tommy in a fight. Mayweather fought very conservatively as a welterweight. He kept his punches to a relative minimum and remained in a defensive shell. One or two punches at a time. Floyd sacrificed power by not fully committing to throwing hard right hands by pulling back into his shell in contrast to the style he employed at lower weights where he threw far more combinations. But he didn’t use that busier style at 147 , where he would need it against The Hitman. Even if he did try to go on the offensive against Hearns, I don’t see much success for him . The others ranked ahead of Mayweather are formidable head to head as well.
I wasn't asking you, I was asking Flash. But I understand what you are saying, I would also favor Hearns over Mayweather at WW. But there are other 19 other boxers on Flash's list. Do you think all of them beat Mayweather at WW ?!?
Sorry White Bomber, I was rushing through and thought you were addressing me. But I can see what you’re saying. I would take Mayweather to defeat everyone on the H2H list from no. 9 on down for sure( except maybe Duran and Forrest). Forrest’s height , reach and style would be a problem.
Pacquiao should be on the list. In the late 2000s he was just steamrolling welterweights on one helluv hot streak even though no one thinks of him as a welter cos he started his career as a light flyweight
Probably would put Jack Britton in somewhere. But most of the other names that need to be on the list are on the list, and at or near their proper order, too. Good job.
Welterweight is deep. Could make solid cases for Ross, Luis Rodriguez, McLarnin, Walcott, and Basilio, among others, to get into the top 10.
See my amended list, the real list. I had excluded Ross and some others by mistake. It’s a few posts after the original one. Ross is at no. 4.
