Really interesting list. Joe Bugner was a top 5 heavyweight in the mid 70s when the division was at its peak. White heavyweights with the best chin? DON COCKELL!
easily marciano, then fitz, jeffs and dempsey for obvious reasons. After that the ones wh were undisputed too but had shorter reigns. Then follows, or mixed with, those with partial reigns. top ten list, divided into the big player ATGs and the "lesser" HOFers would be - Part 1 THE ATGs 1. marciano 2. demps 3. jeffries 4. fitz Part 2 - THE HOFers 5. tuns 6. baer 7. wlad 8. braddock 9. primo 10. ??? Note my lack of support for those who divulged in the colour line heavily, I have to rate lower "partial" title holders like Sullivan... I cant include him.
Bloody hell ive just remembered someone with a better chin than Don Cockell. Randal tex cobb. Insane chin. Best left hook Gerry Cooney. Fattest butter bean
Styles, Wlad's crap stamina, lower than average chin, and Dempsey is significantly faster than most if not all that Wlad faced.
demps would walk through him once he found him out, the only thing ludicrous is your comment given there is no basis nor fight that shows wlad can win.
Because he knocked over an ancient rodeo cowboy, a French pastry who wouldn't even fight Greb, a sick old lightheavy and assorted other breadliners he could beat an immaculately conditioned, fine tuned fighting giant like Wlad? Pshah!
because he defended the undisputed crown against people you just tried to put down. fail. whilst your finetuned giant got easily pulverised by nobodies regualrly in his prime again and again and again and again.
Tony Bellew is now heavyweight after his 2 fights with Haye and has said a few times he wants ward or fury at heavyweight. Is he white?
Wlad could waltz thru Dempsey's resume undefeated in a matter of months. Most of his opponents wouldn't even qualify as modern heavy sparring partners.
ah i see, you use the word "modern" to qualify them as winning, rather than any palpable evidence of a useful win. what a fail. Quiteapart from you trying to run away from the H2H argument.
My rating based on accomplishment Tier One 1-----Rocky Marciano (perfect record and beat the best of his time. Downside is short career.) 2-----Wladimir Klitschko (great longevity and depth of resume. Bad KO defeats in prime, and didn't fight main rivals, Lewis & Vitali, although blameless. Fought and beat best (other than Vitali) for over a decade.) 3-----Jim Jeffries (strong record against best of time, both white and black. But drew color line against Johnson as champ.) Tier Two 4-----Vitali Klitschko (strong stat record, but lost to only two really top men he faced.) Tier Three 5-----Max Schmeling (erratic occasionally, but at best very good, with KO of Louis outstanding.) 6-----Gene Tunney (great stat record, but mainly against light-heavies. Heavyweight resume thin) 7-----Jack Dempsey (didn't beat his three top rivals, Wills, Tunney, and Greb. Drew color line. Didn't win 23% of his fights. But did well against white section of heavyweight division, and had some big KO's, especially Sharkey.) Tier Four 8-----Max Baer (very erratic, with bad losses pulling down occasional strong performances, such as KO's of Schmeling and Carnera.) 9-----Jack Sharkey (even more erratic than Baer. Big wins over Wills, Godfrey, Loughran, and Carnera overcome being able to win only 69% of his fights.) 10----Ingemar Johansson (very thin resume, but beat every man he fought, with strong KO's of Patterson and Machen.) The Rest Bob Fitzsimmons--great p4p fighter, and good heavy in his time Jim Corbett--very thing resume. John L. Sullivan--impossible to judge, really, but the observers at the time feeling he was less good than Jeff weighs strongly with me. Primo Carnera, Marvin Hart, Tommy Burns, Jimmy Braddock--mediocre champions who were probably never the best out there. Jess Willard-another mediocre champion who won the title against an aging but great champ because he could last in a finish fight. Otherwise never did all that much in his career. Billy Conn-----might well have been within the top ten in talent, but way too thin a resume to rate highly. Paulino Uzcudun, Johnny Risko, Rex Layne-----contenders who managed really impressive wins despite erratic careers and a lot of losses. Steve Hamas-----a contender who beat everyone he fought, including Schmeling & Loughran. Jerry Quarry-----generally overrated but beat aging Patterson and some good contenders along with a lot of decisive losses. Gerry Cooney-----looked good against old guys until he fell apart. Alexander Povetkin-----sort of sums up the 21st century heavies other than Wlad. This guy is almost 39, has lost only to Wlad via decision, has strong longevity, and yet to me remains pretty much untested other than the Wlad fight. Somehow never fought Vitali, Wilder, Fury, Joshua, etc. How good was he? I can't say.
