Next in the series after Peter Maher In three categories Best win: In terms of quality of opponent, and manner of victory Most important win: In terms of historical significance Most spectacular performance: More for when we get to ones with footage, but not really the quality of the win, just a great display of the champion's ability. My picks Best win: James J Corbett Most important win: James J Corbett Most spectacular performance: Gus Ruhlin, that KO was scary.
I really think there should be a rule against repeats Best win: Tom Sharkey Most important win: James J Corbett Most Spectacular: Ruhlin
Ruhlin was unsure to survive according to many accounts. He was bleeding from his ears and nose. He was in and out of consciousness for several hours and the worry continued for days.
Maybe Ruhlin should have chosen a different line of work, as I don't think much of him based on what I've seen of him. I truly believe I could beat him. And Corbett for sure. And Fitz. And I don't think much of myself, which tells you I think even less of them. I've seen myself on film and I've seen them. I could beat them.
Ruhlin was dragged back to his corner ,where he fell off his stool. He was taken to his dressing room,[the fight was in the Old Garden,]because he was too ill to move, a makeshift cot was put up for him. Gus was incoherent for several hours ,bleeding from nose, mouth, and ears.He lapsed in and out of consciousness all that night and into the next day .A doctor stayed with him all the time in case he deteriorated further ,there were real fears he might die . Later his manager took him to his home where he spent a week in bed. The fight had been planned to be filmed but the cameras failed before anything was shot . Later a re-enactment film was made by Lubin, and passed off as the real thing which convinced the public until it was spotted that Jim Corbett, who had been Ruhlin's chief second, was not in his corner ,having returned home and refusing to come back for the phoney fight .,Ruhlin had to wear stage makeup to cover up the damage Fitz had inflicted.
