Next in the series after Max Schmeling In three categories Best win: In terms of quality of opponent, and manner of victory Most important win: In terms of historical significance Most spectacular performance: Not really the quality of the win, just a great display of the champion's ability. My picks Best win: Primo Carnera. This was between the Carnera win, or his win over Harry Wills. While I consider Wills the better fighter, I think Carnera was better when Sharkey beat him. Carnera was still a bit premature, but I think Wills was more declined than Carnera was premature. His best wins were years ago, he was getting older and had some inactivity, plus he lost his next fight, and had no later notable wins. Sharkey ended one of the best runs in heavyweight history Most spectacular performance: Jim Maloney (1927 May 20) This content is protected
Best win: Harry Wills Wills had been a very dominant top contender, for a long time, and a green Sharkey bested him decisively. Most important: Max Schmelling II This win put the title in Sharkey's hands, and split opinion, with some seeing Schmeling as champion in all but name! Most spectacular: That would be his destruction of Tommy Loughran. Nobody else came close to doing that to Loughran!
