Next in the series after John L Sullivan

    In three categories
Best win: In terms of quality of opponent, and manner of victory
Most important win: In terms of historical significance
Most spectacular performance: More for when we get to ones with footage, but not really the quality of the win, just a great display of the champion's ability.

    My picks
Best win: Frank Slavin easilly the best opponent he beat, and fairly emphatically.
    Most important win: Frank Slavin
Most spectacular performance: I'd probably pick George Godfrey

Best win: Frank Slavin, he was on a crazy undefeated streak before Jackson took him down (including KOs over Kilrain and McAuliffe)

Most important win: George Godfrey, Old Chocolate was a good name for an early career Jackson

Most Spectacular: Peter Maher, beating the true KO king (Joe McAuliffe was my second choice)

I agree with the Slavin pick.

The hype around Slavin was huge before Jackson beat him.

For most spectacular, you could make a case for the Cardiff win.

Maher, a middleweight had just one pro fight at the time and the fight was little more than an exhibition, certainly not spectacular.

    Slavin was a massive win.
Beating Godfrey made Peter the Black heavyweight champion.
I think the McAuliffe is a good pick as the most impressive.

Godfrey was 35 wasn't he? Am I right in thinking Jackson never defended that title?

I'd say you are correct. I think Tom Johnson was black-not sure-and maybe the unknown Joe Butler, but no defence really.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought Godfrey fell out of the ring against Jackson and cracked his head on concrete .
Is that correct ,or am I confusing it with another fight?

I'm guessing they were really amateur fights.
