A Greb article written by one of the best boxing writers who happens to be a solid historian. The bottom of the link has Greb's full training film. You can see in the film Greb is quick, well balanced, bends down easily and can throw all types of blows. He seems to prefer to circle one way, and ducks with ease. Pretty accurate on the speed bag. A cross between Henry Armstrong and Wille Pep with some of the best qualities of each? Perhaps Any comments from those who break down and watch these type of films? Casey lives about 40 minutes from me. Here is his opinion of Jeffries v Johnson head to head, prime for prime. "However, my instinct tells me that the really clever ring generals would have kept Jeffries at bay. I do not believe, for example, that even a prime Jeffries could have beaten Jack Johnson over fifteen rounds". "One of the best boxing writers and a solid historian" .:good
Hmmm... that's one perspective. I have an article where Cletus Scruggins, who goes by the folksy moniker "Grand Wizard", scoring the fight as a "whitewash" for Jeffries. All perspectives are equal, you know.
Even you say Jeffries when he was champion beats Johnson:deal Wasn't Corbett a clever ring general who according to you had even faster footwork than Johnson.:deal Now this is a Greb thread. Let's stick to it.
No I don't, I say prime for prime Johnson kicks his racist ass! According to Johnson Corbett had faster feet, and that's all he had over Johnson.

Yes, you did say Jeffries beats Johnson when he was champion. Hard to tell if your lying again, or just plain unaware of your soundings. This time I think its the later. When discussing Johnson you have said its unfair to judge a man out of his time, but bigotry prevents you from saying the same others. Suits you just fine. Jeffries did call Johnson a skunk. Johnson was a pimp, a wife beater, a law breaker, a man who called colored women two timers, and more. I'd say his description was aptly put. Congratulations for ruining a Greb thread.
We on ESB have the modern version of the Hatfields and the McCoys in McVey and Mendoza. Maybe love is akin to hate ?.
Johnson was not prime when Jeffries was champion. I feel confident that Jeffries beats Johnson at any time during his reign. Prime for prime though is a different situation. Corbett, didnt necessarilly have better footwork than Johnson, he just had more of a dancing style. I get the feeling he also was quite a bit faster than Johnson but dont think he had anywhere near the strength. Corbett Johnson would have been interesting to see. It is a shame they never got around to fighting their proposed 6 rounder. It would have been great to have film of these two going at it, even if it was obvious Johnson would have dominated and won at that stage. And to get things back on track, it would have been also great to have seen Jack Johnson fight Harry Greb back in 1919 after he KOd Jim Flynn. I do think that is a mountain too high for Harry to climb even as great as he was and past it as Johnson was. Such a fight would certainly have put an interesting spin on things.
