Thanks for the list, Klompton. Of course it is an impressive list, but not as many fights as Charles had. Also, while i'm not much of an expert of the lower weight classes of that era, i see you also included names like Meehan, who i'd hardly consider world class, despite 4 round, disputed, victories over Dempsey.

Wow look at all the great light-heavyweights Greb beat

Gene Tunney (1) – Hall of Famer – World Heavyweight Champion – Beat Dempsey twice
Tommy Loughran (4) – Hall of Famer – World Light Heavyweight Champion
Jimmy Slattery (1) – Hall of Famer – World Light Heavyweight Champion
Maxie Rosenbloom (1) – Hall of Famer – World Light Heavyweight Champion
Jack Dillon (2) – Hall of Famer – World Light Heavyweight Champion
Battling Levinsky (6) – Hall of Famer – World Light Heavyweight Champion
Mike McTigue (2) – World Light Heavyweight Champion
Tommy Gibbons (2) – Hall of Fame Light-Heavyweight
Kid Norfolk (1) – Hall of Fame Light-Heavyweight

MY GOD!! that might just be the best light-heavyweight resume of all time. If we go by wins soely, Greb is a lock at # 1 all time 175lb. I think a good case can be made Greb deserves to be rated over Both Loughran and Tunney at 175lb.

Meehan was a top contender for the heavyweight title based on several of his wins not just the wins over Dempsey. I dont agree that he was an actual threat but at the time he was viewed as a contender as such I have him in there. Several men on Charles resume who were considered "contenders" were not threats for a championship either but were ranked or considered near the top in their division.

I never said Darcy was a nobody. I think he was a solid contender but his contention that he was a champion is ridiculous and the high esteem hes held in is questionable given that aussies think he would have run through the middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight divisions with ease. Yes McGoorty and Smith were excellent contenders, I never said HOFers you said that. Yes Darcy had loads of trouble with George KO Brown and his first victory over Brown was a considered a bad decision. Its mentioned in every bio Ive ever read on Darcy and the newspaper reports. Darcy claimed to have been hit low by Smith, no one else saw it, and neither did the referee. Smith was an excellent body puncher and a famously clean fighter (how many times was he legitimately DQd?) He hit Darcy with a bodyshot that made Darcy quit claiming a foul. The referee wouldnt allow the foul and the fight was stopped because Darcy refused to continue. In the USA that would have been considered a TKO for Smith but friendly officiating being what it was Darcy was DQd and a rematch was set. In the rematch Smith was criminally DQd before the fight even opened up. He took the matter to court but Australians stick together and he was never paid for his efforts. He left Australia angry and never forgave the Baker brothers or McIntosh. I have several interviews with him where he tells all about the shinnanigans that made Darcy's legacy. All of those fighters came back with interesting stories about how things were done over there in an effort to clean up on the gambling. Buck Crouse was brought over and then told he wouldnt be paid unless he threw fights. It was well known that McGoorty's first fight with Darcy was faked and he later admitted throwing the fight for gambling purposes. Lots of those guys had similar stories. That combined with the fact that Darcy was fighting for an Australian championship at 160 which is 2 pounds over our limit at that time, had all kinds of friendly officiating etc makes me think that he would have had a lot of problems when he came over here. His exhibition tour here was extremely unpopular and that was even before the slacker talk started. He was overweight and didnt appear the phenom he had been painted to be that combined with his unwillingness to face our best fighters and his ridiculously high asking prices for a match soured people on Darcy long before they ever heard of his greedy/cowardly escape from Australia.
