Ok, so there's still some guys around today that are not only historians, but they've been around a long time.

I'm thinking of Freddie Roach, Teddy Atlas, Mike Tyson, Bernard Hopkins, James Toney.

Those guys knew their history, had they seen any footage of Greb? Did they even have an opinion on the man?

There isn't any footage outside of the sparring. Tyson was a fan of Mickey Walker, but doesn't seem to talk much of Greb.

Greb footage has been lost for a while. I strongly doubt it

I have read all the books on Greb, and lots of newspaper reports of his fights, taken from the web, and I have finally ( I think ) come up with what I would imagine he fought like.

So, he was a bit Aryon Prior, a bit, Naseem Hamed, a bit Vinny Piazzane, a bit Slapsie Maxi Rosenbloom, a bit Sammy Angott ( he clucthed a lot ) is the fighters mentioned ok for you ?

Or do you have your interpretation of his style, see I used to think ( a long time ago ) that he was a brawler, walk you down, and wear you out, but the copy suggests pretty much the opposite, in and out, up and down, left and right, not in one place for more than a couple of seconds, never still, always on the move, except when he clinched, which towards the end apparently he did a lot. Only going by what I have read, as have you guys.

I wonder when the last time known Greb footage was around.

Apparently Jim Jacobs had been searching for 37 years in 1986 and could never find any Greb footage. I'd think the odds of anyone alive having seen it are very low. Nor had he even met anyone that had seen it.

It's actually crazy, given the amount of high profile fights that he had.

Youd puke if you knew how many great old fight films have been lost to history. I keep a running list of lost fight films and itd make you sad.

Tunney-Greb would make me happy again though.

    Or Walker - Greb.

    Wait.

Is it too late to ask for both?

Nice. I would throw in Calzaghe, too. Obviously Kompton wrote the best book. I would like to know the modern fighters he considers analogous.

I know that I would love to see Greb and Walker...the real deal is that I wouldn’t trade it for what I have of Louis, Robinson, Dempsey etc.

If we had film on him, most likely he would be called a bum who held his guard weird, clinched a lot and someone the Roy Jones would KO in the first round.

Ive always kinda thought hed be a hybrid between a slappy light puncher like Calzaghe and wild, unorthodox, and technically unschooled fighter like Mayorga. Mayorga kind of comes in with these wild windmill punches and if you take away his punch, up his punch output, and throw in a lot of footwork and bobbing and weaving my guess is you might have an idea of what Greb fought like. Not pretty but effective and tough to beat.

It seems to be accepted that Greb’s style wasn’t aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
But whatever it was it must have been awfully effective.

Greb was probably a hybrid of Carlos Maussa (extremely weird and not pleasant to watch but pretty effective style), Andre Ward (again, far from pretty but very effective style + holding) and Joe Calzaghe

It seems like you just described Andre Ward LOL They probably had something similar in their styles
