Rematch? I'll let the people decide - Danny Green

    by Daniel Lane - 12 Dec 2010

IBO world cruiserweight champion Danny Green said the public would ultimately decide whether his much-touted rematch with arch-nemesis Anthony Mundine would go ahead after the former rugby league star's shock defeat to the little-fancied Garth Wood.

Wood, who was granted his shot at Mundine after he won the reality television show The Contender, stunned fight fans on Wednesday by becoming the first Australian to defeat the former world champion.

The fifth-round KO to a boxer who had had only 11 bouts has definitely bruised, but not destroyed, Mundine's plan to base himself in America to chase a series of big fights, including a bout with Mexico's WBA junior-middleweight champion, Rigoberto Alvarez.

Green said from his home in Perth that he would afford Mundine the same respect the indigenous fighter displayed after their bout at the Sydney Football Stadium four years ago.

"After 'Choc' beat me in our fight, I found he was very gracious about it all," Green said. "We've exchanged a few verbal hand grenades since then, but in the immediate aftermath of the loss he was gracious in victory - and despite our differences of opinion about a few things - I have never forgotten the [decent] way he acted after our fight."

However, Green said it remained to be seen whether the public still had an appetite for him and Mundine to lock horns again.

"I really don't know," he said. "It is up to the people if they want to see it. Before Wednesday night the public really wanted it. I was always being asked when it would happen, it was relentless and it was crazy. I guess we now we have to wait to see where that all stands."

Green and Mundine contested the highest-grossing bout in Australia when they fought at the Sydney Football Stadium, and while many critics said the West Australian was "washed up" after the defeat, he fought on. Apart from winning two world titles he entered Australian sports folklore a year ago when, as the 5-1 underdog, he destroyed Hall of Fame-bound Roy Jones jnr with a first-round knockout.

"I've moved on since May 2006," Green said of the Mundine loss. "After that bout a lot of people, including [veteran trainer] Johnny Lewis, suggested I should give it away. But I think I proved I have the heart of a world champion. I moved up in weight and won the [light heavy and cruiserweight] titles.

"I've been undefeated in my 10 bouts since [Mundine].

"Manny Siaca may not have been the best world champion, but he was a champion; the win over Roy Jones speaks for itself - I knocked out one of the all-time greats in the first round; Paul Murdoch and Jason DeLisle both fought for the world title in their previous bouts to me and I beat them.

"I defeated the WBA world champion Stipe Drews for his title, I stopped up-and-comer Otis Griffin, who recently beat Byron Mitchell in an upset, and I beat BJ Flores last month. The guys I've beaten have either been world champions, or they've been in the mix for world titles."

Wood, who bagged $250,000 and his shot at Mundine after winning The Contender, should expect a formal challenge from Sydneysider Sakio Bika to fight him in a made-for-television bout.

Bika, who suffered a unanimous points decision loss to WBA super-middleweight champion Andre Ward in California last month, won the US Contender series.

Wood should stay clear of Bika. He won't beat him!

Interesting to hear Barry Michael on DSS radio show tonight say he'd like to see Mundine rematch Wood at super middleweight next up, and then go up again in weight for a rematch with Green!

Reckon Green would be salivating at the thought!

Wood demonstrated first hand to Green that his approach in 2006 by trying to beat Mundine at his own game was not the correct approach.

The 2010 version of Green will need to be right on his game, but it's hard to see the 2010 version of Mundine still there at the final bell.

Agree on both counts - though Mundine beat him so easily I'm not sure how much difference it would have made.

The cruiser-weight title Green was able to procure as part of enticing Roy Jones to Australia may end up being a burden to him IMO.

Granted the cruiser title has coincided with his return to form and confidence, but I'm sure he'd be better off at light heavy where he could fight guys his own size.

Toatally agree with what you've written:good
It served its purpose [ibo belt] but now Danny is sort of stuck in no mans land.
The decision to put on a few kgs for his latest fight is probably going to make it difficult for him to cut back to 175 which would suggest he's going to commit to cruiserweight i'd say.

Bika's barely been off his feet - in fact I'm not even sure he's ever been off his feet? He would be too good for Wood IMO.

Probably further highlights the difficulty in finding a good next up for Wood.

Hopefully it'll be Mundine II - but could anyone really see him winning a second time?

Probably only from the point of view it would mean retirement for Choc, and hopefully another good payday for Wood, who seems like he was due for a bit of luck in his life.

Bika wld kill Wood....... Silly fight for Woods unless a good pay day.

    Back to the topic:
In Greens defence, the Mundine he faced in 2006 was absolutely prime Mundine that night and 6 months either side of that date.

An extra 5-7lbs that night wld have no affect, actually if Mundine was heavier he probably hits Green with that Guy Waters KO punch :think

I've no desire to see a rematch between Green and Mundine now, there would be no point.

Mundine is done - a victory over him at this stage would be worthless.
