I'm going with Haugen. It's not a forgone conclusion of course but Juan Diaz had the tendency to get careless which I think is a problem against a good counter puncher.
Agreed. I could actually see a late stoppage for Haugen. He would just counter Diaz so cleanly and so often that I think eventually Juan gets stopped.
Greg was a very good fighter in his prime. He beat camacho, pazienza and Paul - all three of whom were conceivably better then anyone Diaz ever beat. He was doing okay in his first fight with Marquez until JMM caught him clean and knocked him out.
Greg neatly outboxes Diaz. Haugen was more than just a "brawler" as some clueless commentators on tv back in the 80's would refer to him. Haugen had subtle boxing skills and he would have used them vs Juan Diaz.
Yeah, Haugen was a damn good counterpuncher, had a very good defense, and a high ring IQ. And although he wasn't blazing quick, he had deceptive quickness. And though not a big puncher, he had deceptive pop. I think he takes Diaz out in about 10 or 11 after schooling him most of the fight.
It's a testament to how exceptionally good Whitaker was that he made Haugen look like a completely clueless idiot for 12 rounds. Haugen was NOT a clueless idiot, but Whitaker just comprehensively schooled him. One of the finest boxing exhibitions ever.
Haugen by decision Diaz was very busy and lacked power. Haughen would slow him down with rights down the pike. Haughen would dominate the late rounds.
Agreed,...it was a master class.Haugen himself said in an interview that Whitaker was the best he ever faced...even more than Chavez.
