    Hello Classic!

I've just been reading up a little bit on the former Heavyweight titlist Greg Page. Admittedly, I've never seen one of his fights but I've heard some good things. Perhaps the knowledgeable posters on the classic can inform me a little more on Greg Page. What was his strengths, weaknesses, and where would he rank among the Heavyweight contenders in the 80s?

    All input would be appreciated.

The first time I saw Greg Page fight was against Gerrie Coetzee in '84. It was a pretty good fight with Page knocking Coetzee out in the 8th round.

One moment sticks out in my mind about that fight - at the start of the second round, Coetzee's corner was pretty slow in giving him his mouthpiece. In fact, the bell had already rung and Coetzee had his back turned slightly towards Page and his corner were faffing around with the mouthguard.
Greg saw this and charged across the ring and attacked Coetzee, which he was perfectly entitled to do.

Many people are of the opinion Page never lived up to his potential, and that if he had been more dedicated, he could have been a dominant champion. I remember him once saying: "Weight is something women worry about." Greg wasn't the most disciplined of fighters, much like Tubbs, Dokes, Witherspoon and Thomas - all guys with a lot of ability but who seemed to squander much of it.

The person to really give you more info is John Thomas.

    Fantastic. :good

I think the Coetzee fight is currently uploaded on youtube in its entirety. I'll take some time out later to watch it. On all accounts I've read, this title winning fight seems to have been the highlight of an otherwise disappointing career. Well, disappointing considering Page's potenitial. This is the stuff I have read.

Probably the most talented of the 80's heavies, had good power, tremendous speed, and a good chin. Was not the strongest guy in the world and could be outmuscled, but probably the main reason he never achieved what he could have was his heart was not totally into the sport. The implication I've gotten recently was that his father, who was an ex-boxer, somewhat pushed him into it.His first love was basketball, and that where his heart was truly into.

He was good enough that Larry Holmes gave up his WBC belt rather than fight him!
