because he boxed renaldo snipes ears off a few yrs back.....and he is the only fighter to go to south africa due to the apartied.
idk about that..it was decent but not something home to write about...ruddock had him out on his feet wobbling...and mark wills a mere journeyman brutally ko'ed him twice in his prime
I just reviewed it last night..... Page MIGHT'VE beat Ruddock had he been south of age 30 in that ring........ Prime '92 Ruddock looked clueless up until rd. 6 if you ask me... Ruddock over-throwing his 'Smash' which often missed, and he forsaked his jab.... Trainer 'Patterson' looked upset with Ruddock... MR.BILL:bbb
One of the few that could have been mentioned in the same breath as Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson,if he'd fulfilled his potential. Then we'd have had THREE great heavyweights of the 1980's.
True. However, it was "Dokes & Page" who were groomed to take over after Holmes was to retire... But, then came a kid named Mike Tyson... MR.BILL:hat
True. Page or Dokes could have been dominant between,say,1984-86. Imagine a fight between totally focused versions of Page and Dokes !
Blame Cooney and white America for causing "Holmes versus Page or Dokes" for not happening............ Holmes grossed $10 million, but only saw (according to Larry) 3 million from his epic with Cooney in 1982... Don King offered Holmes a gross of $2.5 million to defend against Page in 1983 and Holmes balked and walked away, thus getting stripped by the WBC..... As for a fight with Dokes, well, a gross of a few million tops is all Holmes was gonna see against Dokes, too...... Holmes in 1983 and 1984 knew his fellow black contenders could NOT generate the BIG bucks that "Cooney & Coetzee" could grant the aging Larry Holmes...... bbb:good Too bad the '84 superfight with Coetzee fell through.... Holmes was slated to earn $ 8 million to Coetzee's $4 million dollar payday.... Coetzee went back to S. Africa to get KO'd by Greg Page in 1984..... MR.BILL:hat
Good post,Mr Bill. I never rated Cooney at all. He certainly was n't in the class of Page or Dokes. As you say,it was the 'white heavyweight' thing. What do you reckon of a fight between Page and Dokes ?
Totally bizarre........ By 1983, my man L. Holmes was ready to be taken by a young, hungry tiger with some experience.... Tim Spoon almost did it, but was still too green to follow through in 1983 Las Vegas.... Its a good possibility that either "Page or Dokes" would've decisioned Holmes in 1983 over 12 rds... No chance of kayoing Holmes... BUT! I'll take a 1992 Larry Holmes who was hammering Ray Mercer and holding his own with Evan Fields as a solid favorite to out-box "Page or Dokes" in that year..... From my understanding of Greg Page's career, he had a very good chin. When he was in his decent prime, only Quick Tillis was able to floor him.As far as the amateurs go, until recently, I thought he was never floored, but Woody Clark floored him twice en route to beating him by decision in the 1976 Olympic Trials in Detroit.
