Great read! Really enjoyed it. Found out stuff about Monzon I never knew. Thanks! Wonder what became of Abel (Monzon's then 5-year old son in 1972).

Good read, thanks for it. One of my favourite fighters, but he had a dark, dark side out of the ring for sure.

I wouldnt be surprised, I dont know how true it is but I read he smoked up to 100 cigarettes a day. Incredible that I have never really seen him look tired in the ring if it is true :blood

15 years today since the death of the greatest middleweight champion of all time...a monster maybe in his personal life, but one of the greatest of the ELITE of boxing. R.I.P. anyway Champ!!!

Interesting article but it speaks volumes that even his friends were **** scared of him and thought him devoid of a sense of humour.

I'm in two minds about Monzon.

Yes he was one of the very best ever fighers but does the horrendous violence he inflicted upon others, namely Susana Gimenez,Alicia Muniz (whom he murdered) or the multitude of papparazzo he battered overshadow his ring mastery?

    It probably does.

I know he's a fave of classic forum but the man was an out and out **** and it doesn't matter how hard he had it young as you can always find someone who had it harder, without having the need to bash women or weaker people.

Those guys earn every battering they get for the job they chose. No pity here.

I don´t consider life outside the ring to matter for ranking a fighter.

If you're ranking him purely as figher, well he's one of the best.

But the fact people celebrate Monzon and his achievments without barely mentioning his flip side annoys me a bit, likewise Ray Robinson. Both were two of the greatest but were seriously lacking as human beings.Still that doesn't stop people from gushing over their fistic prowess never minding the fact that it wasn't just in the ring that they chose to display it.

Yeah papparazzi today are **** but back when old Carlos was getting locked up for bashing them, they were just photographers more or less. They were just trying to do their job and add colour for the news reports of the day.

Well, another thing is that Monzon had the style that didn't really require him to exert much energy. Slow and lumbering, yet rangy and powerful enough to keep opponents at bay. Thus, relatively taller guys like Monzon could be successful despite chain-smoking, whereas shorter guys who'd have to work harder would run the risk of gassing out if they engaged in such habits.

    LAXPDX:

How do you think Carlos would fare against the very coordinated Micheal Nunn?
