If you know how to punch correctly you'll know when you punch there should be a straight line from your elbow to your wrist through to your knuckles. There's your answer.
So it makes the pnuch harder but not more powerful? That doesn't really make sense, if it makes you a better puncher then surely it will increase your punch power.
Bruce Lee was a 'forearm fanatic'. He had huge forearms for a guy of his size, well he simply had huge forearms for any size. He believed that it increased punching power, I agree with this. Also, if you're a big puncher you need strong wrists or you'll hurt them when punching with power. I have decent pop in my punches, I used to trian my forearms every second day, but then stopped, my wrists began hurting when boxing, I've started training my forearms again.
Bruce Lee, huge forearms? You must not be talking about that little, skinny martial arts actor... Can we see a picture of these "huge" forearms? And what studies have you read that make you believe this? I know you like Bruce Lee, but believing something just because he said it is just blind following. Not really. I'm about 180lb and punch fairly hard, I don't have any problems with my wrists, never have. It's more about the alignment of your punch than strength. You have no need at all to work your forearms this much.

I'm not talking a half hour workout or anything, I'm talking about a few sets of wrist curls, reverse wrist curls etc each and taking handgrips about with me some days. I believe it helps because I've tried it and it seems to work, maybe my increased 'snap' is just mental, or maybe it's just that I'm becoming a better boxer, but I feel that grip trainning helps me in my training.
Yet again Ylem shits up another training thread.. and no Ylem you do not know how to punch properly, a man as big as you should hit alot harder than you do. Anyway back to the subject. Grip training does improve your overall hand health in boxing. It makes your hands and wrists more resistant to injury. There is a theory that by 'Wolff's law' bone density increases in reponse to load. Under this theory, grip training would make your hands denser and therefore provide some increase in punching power. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolff's_law The effect is likely to be minimal, especially with 10oz gloves on. However, as has already been said, anoyone serious about boxing will do anything to give themselves an edge. Just FYI, as far as crushing grip strength is concerned (yes its different from static grip strength) Captains of Crush are king.
It worked for me too man, I feel like I have a lot more snap in my punches since I started working out my forearms hard..
ohhhh so i didnt know how to punch properly back in october 2009? do i really need to put up a more recent bag video to show that i can punch? well atleast you agree with me that grip training is good.
I was thinking about putting up a bag vid and a shadow boxing video. i also i did 5 rounds between the bag and shadow boxing a couple days ago where 2 rounds on the bag and the one shadow boxing arnt that bad that i might put up also. i record every time i shadow box and hit the bag in my garage so that i can spend hours rewatching it and critiqueing my technique....endless videos to choose from. I even have a video i can put up from a month or so ago where i weighed my heavy bag recorded the weight on the scale then hung it up and hit it alittle incase i ever need to prove that its a 92.8 lb bag or more perscisely a 40 lb bag with 10 lbs of stuffing taken out and 62 lbs of sand put in that is many times harder, moves less, and feels heavier then any 100 lb bag ive ever used. so what do you think? a decent round of bag work of what i have recorded and a decent round of shadow boxing, or the 3 rounds in the middle of the 5 with breaks recorded?
I don't give a **** man I'm sure it's all good for a laugh, just put something up haha I like you hey Ylem
Ill put em all up.....i just hope i dont get some one who picks out the like 5 times i throw a sloppy jab out of the 500 or so times i jabbed and then tell me i need to work on my jabs.
Thank **** there are actually some people who can fight and throw a propper punch on these forums.. these are the times when it really shows the internet/youtube boxers from the real boxers...lol Yes ylem you can go and hit a bag and or wall without hand wraps on. go and give it a shot and come back and tell us if it worked m8, pics/video needed as proof or you were too ***** to do it. I dont know why i bother with these forums you just get good advice thrown back in your face
it was sarcasm or perhaps a rehtorical question. if strengthening your forearms is worthless whats the point in wearing hand wraps? and if there is a point in wearing hand wraps because a stronger wrist helps make your fist harder and helps you avoid injuries then i guess you shouldnt have said "strengthening the forarms just isnt needed" as thats clearly wrong. and the whole thing about how incorrect range can make a punch weak and expend force at your elbow was a great post......but really had nothing to do with strengthening your forearm and why you think strengthening your forearm just isnt needed. as well i spent about a year doing wing chun and got belts for the first 2 forms and the mook jong form(wooden dummy), so really i would have no problem punching a wall decently hard with out gloves or hand wraps and regually dont used hand wraps for anything less then 3 rounds on the bag which is alittle worse then it sounds as my bag is about 2/3's sand actually there was allready about 15 lbs of sand in the bag before i did anything so really its closer to 80% sand.
