Any type of strengthening that improves your results as a boxer, such as increase in punching power, or stronger hands so that you can hit harder without injury, make you a better boxer. To argue otherwise is pedantic.

The thing that really bugs me about this thread is that ylem is actually advocating some form of strength training.. WTF? You say that being strong wont make you a better boxer, but having strong forearms will? I R O N Y

Ylem why dont you tell me how you punch? from that little bit of info you gave me there i can tell your technique could be better, because you talk alot about 1 shoulder etc and to be fair if your doing anything with your shoulder it should involve the other shoulder assisting pulling the assisting shoulder back to rotate them properly otherwise your putting yourself more on the front foot/reaching than the back and that is a common mistake through bad technique which costs you mobility and will weaken any right hand thrown from there, you mention nothing about the legs when punching and thats where everything starts so why dont you start there lets hear your technique and ill tell you where you could be better.

Mock me all you want tell me how good technique is performed and then we'll be having a debate, so far your just saying whats wrong not whats right? as u can understand my trainer doesnt want me posting details on forums and giving too much away so u can probably appreciate i cant mention everything but i bet i can mention a few things that doesnt help punch power, speed and mobility if you just write a little more about your technique, starting with the feet..

the punch comes from the foot goes up the bck of the leg into the back from there there is a pull ing type motion comeing from your serratus anterior pec minor and clavical head of the pec major pulling the force in your back forward instead of up(the direction the force was going) the force hits the shoulder whirl then takes this force and sends it down your arm while at the same time you use your abs to rotate with the punch the force essentially skipping the back and shoulder and bicep and just going straight to the elbow

so now your with your shoulder back about to whirl into the punch and you use your abs to rotate forward sending a little extra speed into the fore arm allowing everything to move inturn nothing lagging as i stated everything coming straight out. a moment after you whirl forward and rotate from your core your going to want to rotate your other shoulder back going with the flow of everything then at about 85% of full range you turn the punch over and make impact.

every action has an equal and opposite reaction. when you hit a heavy bag the force comes back into your arm and into your shoulder eccentrically pulling your front delts when you shadow box every punch is eccentrically pulling your rear delts at the end of the range.

this is why my shoulders and any one that boxes shoulders are probly going to be alittle sore after a few hard rounds.

i can also explain an over hand right a straight right with the knucles verticle a suzie q which is a falling right a short right and even a right cross which isnt actually a punch but a counter puncher.

can you tell me the diffrence between a left straight and a jab?

Seems you know a bit of the science behind a punch, Ylem. Pitty you can't do it properly :rofl

He's asking how you punch, not how are you meant to punch in over the top scientific detail.

Why do you always ask something irrelevant? Do you always feel the need to attempt to prove your boxing knowledge or what?

he asked me how to punch now i want to know if he knows something as basic as the diffrence between a jab and a left straight.

i mean i just outlined what a straight punch is....even an idiot could look at it and say ohhhhh thats what im not doing when i jab.....but if you dont even know how to jab you might have problems.

Not only is this description incredibly long winded and over complicated, it is also very subjective. Different coaches and fighters generally have different variations of each technique, although the basic principles of rotation and stepping into the punch are usually the same.

Also, writing about how to throw a punch never guarantees you can actually throw one. There is no way you will be able to think of all that in the process of throwing a shot, if you can then I could literally get out of the ring, go home, eat dinner and come back in time for it to hit me.

He asked about your punching technique so he can help you. Now you're questioning him on his boxing knowledge. Yeah, makes sense.

And what makes the guy an idiot, he disagrees with you? You can learn something new off anyone.

Explain to me the fighting styles this guy has done and for how long. Oh wait, you have absolutely no clue.

As usual your ego has done you over.

nothing makes him an idiot yet.....but if he cant answer something like the diffrence between a jab and a left straight while hes been trying to tell me proper punch technique for a few days now, that makes him an idiot.

I can tell you that your missing a lot of things out about placement of the feet, knees, etc and probably for a reason.. becaus that is by far the hardest most technical bit, but maybe next post you will tell me about how you use your feet because at the minute im starting to think your an arm puncher.

the rotation should hardly be anything to do with your abs tbh, your feet and knees are rotating your pelvis, not your abs rotating your shoulders, you rotate the front shoulder and back shoulder anti-clockwise for lets say a right hand, the abs should hardly have anything to do with this if your feet and knees have done their job and rotated your pelvis properly through the shot.

pulling back the assisting shoulder and around the throwing shoulder, and lets say if you do this with your abs then clearly your reaching around with your upper body fighting against muscles and flexibility to bring your shot around for a greater range of motion before you will start losing power. which will be slowed and nullified because your not rotating your hips properly bringing them with you, (using your feet and knees properly stop these restrictions over relying on this twisting can cause you to face and then you are punching from the hip) and stopping any resistance due to muscles without even contracting them.. which is a big no, no concidering what our next object is.

trigger muscles this is the muscles you need to throw shots all the other muscles you will be contracting that you dont need to will act as little hand breaks, think of the unnessecary muscles as a handbreak does on a car.. the way you use your abs will force them to act as a handbreak after a short range of motion without proper assistance from the feet, rotationg the hips. this also slows a shot and weakens it aswell as expending excess energy than is required for the movement if your using good economy, if you dont know the triggers i can assume you have a problem with throwing and both bringing back the punch to avoid a sloppy counterable punch, but you never mentioned the importance of finishing the punch and the precautions that should be taken as to not finish it slowly or have it leaving you with less mobility incase the shot ends up being countered, afterall the return of a shot accounts for half of the speed of the total movement.

without this propper hip rotation essentially you have an arm punch like a jab, thus a weaker shot, i cant really go any further unless i start making assumptions but i wont ill let you tell me exactly what you do even though i think i have an idea, tell me about your feet, all those punches you dropped dont mean anything because it seems you have overlooked major parts of throwing a basic right hand which is almost identical to a right hook apart from the path the elbow travels, so i dread to think how your other punches look..

I could go on and on but i dont think im willing to give you anymore info on technique because you simply dont deserve it, you mention nothing about the feet which is everything when boxing with an opponent and striking in general so your still not really saying anything that we havent allready told you on this thread.. tell me somthing i havent just told you, forget the shoulders i just told you about.. forget those punches and tell me about your feet and the precautions you take to make your punches snappy with good penetration, but not sloppy, lazy and counterable, how do you leave yourself with multiple angles to move off on after throwing each basic punch? im starting to suspect you dont even spar do you?

    A few possible reasons.

    1. It's entirely irrelevant.
    2. He could know and it proves nothing.
    3. This is the Internet, you can find out anything in a few minutes.
    4. Even if he told you correctly your opinion wouldn't change.
    5. It's entirely irrelevant.

I can see why he hasn't bothered answering...

Have you uploaded your videos yet? It would make it easier to prove you have a clue...
