I think that George Groves and James DeGale are two top SMW prospects to go with the wealth of fantastic SMWs that have come out of Britain in the last 15/20 years (Eubank, Benn, Calzaghe, Reid, Froch, Woodhall, Catley not to forget Starie, Wharton, Francis etc), but one thing that worrys me about both of them, as that they both seem to take alot of big punches and get bashed up in their recent fights (I know its about levels, but they are still young in their careers)

Personally I would like them both to make it and then rematch (thought Groves did enough)

Do you think they will go to the top or do you think these constant tough fights will prevent them going all the way? Or do you think one will rise to the top and not the other?

In the next couple of years the SMW division will lose some of it's top fighters with froch nearing retirement and ward close to a move to light heavy, and with them gone I can see talented fighters like these two stepping up and taking their place

    Fact is...

Nobody cares about them, unless they fight each other.

I didn't even know Groves was fighting tonight, until 12.30am......

It's Fwanks fault, they had quite a bit of publicity and never built on it. It's a bit of a shame

I don't really care much for them ether....

George Groves is the better fighter.

James Degale is really poor, and i cannot stand him.

This speaks volumes, you didn't know Groves was fighting tonight? Are you a fight fan or just a casual?

As i said in the RBR, they are bringing groves along nicely, he's fighting comparible opposition to what Ward was fighting before he came into the super 6, and was same age as Groves.

These are the fights where you iron out the wrinkles in his game, and to be fair he has shown a lot of different looks and abilities in his last few Fights, Booth is doing a good job with him, 2-3 more fights to refine him and he'll be ready for the big fights

To often these potentiol stars are fast tracked to the top. Once at the top there are no easy fights, so any faults or weaknesses wll be exposed. Better to iron out these problems on the way up than have the huge shock of being exposed at the top.

I can agree with that, but they both seem to end up getting bashed up alot for such early days.
I think both can go places, when you consider DeGale is European champ and Groves beat DeGale, so they are moving towards world level at a fast pace, but defence wise, both seem to get caught alot

People over here seem to want our guys thrown into the world stage without adequate prep due to impatience or whatever, The americans have been getting it right lately, Dawson, Ward, Dirrell were all brought along slowly and were fighting similar opposition to what groves and degale are facing now, we were actually lucky to get Groves vs Degale on the way up, you'd never see two top yank prospects fighting each other in the learning stages of their career.

I don't think defensive genius is in the British DNA, and your inevitably one day it does catch up with fighters. Makes for brilliant viewing but nit so good for career longevity . I can't recall the last British fiter that had me in awe of his ability to make his opponent miss, probably Naseem.

David Haye shows flashes of defensive brilliance from time to time imo, he certainly did against Wladamir, who's normally incredibly accurate. His performance in that fight was contemptible, but I don't think you can fault his defence in that one, if the man doesn't want to be hit, you don't have much chance of hitting him.

I agree overall though, I don't think Defensive strategy is a particular strength of British trainers.

Good shout, even though Haye carries his hands quite low, his speed of foot and upper body movement make him difficult to pin down. If only he had th balls to counter hook maybe the heavyweight scene would be completely different now.

If the Vitali fight comes off, I think we will se him gunsling a little more.

Against Valuev, he could not afford to lose, and against Wlad, as Booth said he was having "nightmares" about Wlads right hand.

Haye has nothing to lose anymore so hope he fights like that against Vitali, whos slowed down hella lot, and i don't know if at 41 years of age he will particularly enjoy hayemakers to the face.

    i hope so anyway

I have made it crystal clear throughout the years, that i only pay attention to fighters and fights that interest me.

I couldn't give a flying **** about certain fights or fighters. Until i see something in them or they do something that sparks my interest. I have always always been this way with the sport.

I have always made this crystal clear.

Dawson vs Ward is the only fight i am deeply interested in, in these coming months.

If this is being a casual fan, i like being a casual fan.

You won't see me, up in a Ricky Burns thread or Frankie Gavin fight thread........i don't give a ****.
