It's not a massive improvement but he wasn't wasting as much energy as usual. I.e running around the ring. Although I agree we won't see much improvement.
This. Just watched the fight, typical Amir, rushing in throwing arm punches, he's so open to counters it's unreal. If Molina could dig a bit, he would have sparked Amir.
Khan will never change fundamentally as a fighter. Virgil Hunter can try and make small modifications like tightening him up a bit or improving his concentration but I can't see his style adapting. He is what he is and he's been towards the top of the Light Welterweight division with that style so it's not the end of him or anything like that. But to expect a 'new' Khan under Hunter is just naive IMO. He will always look to flurry off his jab with his speed and circle the ring. It's flashy and at times effective but he's always fell in with that jab and that is the key to leaving him exposed vs top fighters. His inability to fight on the inside won't change either; all Hunter can do is try to keep his defences tighter when on the ropes. Khan is by no means a bad fighter but expectations need to be tempered. Last night's opponent was not a stiff test, which was clear to see before the fight, but there was no indication of an improved, refined Khan. I still think he can beat the likes of Peterson, Garcia or Brook with his way of fighting but Hunter will not change him significantly IMO
There's not much change. He got caught with a hard counter left hook in the 1st round. If that was a counter left hook from Garcia he would have been KO'd. Nobody can say there's much change when 1 round in to a fight he gets caught with the same punch that ended him in his last fight.
Don't get so worked up because people are rightly sceptical that Khan can significantly change as a fighter. I'll put that question back to you, what do you expect from him? Because if you think Hunter's going to massively improve, then I think you're mistaken.
I didn't expect a dog a change it's habits overnight. I don't expect massive improvements, I never have. I understand the limitations of the man. What I don't like is how everyone who is 'sceptical' are the ones who actually expected him to be totally different based on what they're saying.
:good One of the earlier rounds. Only point I thought 'wow, that's something we haven't seen before'. Paulie and Al Bernstein on Showtime liked the fact that he wasn't jumping around like the Duracell Bunny and was just taking little walks instead. Paulie reckoned he didn't fall in with his punches as much. Schaefer's talking about Josesito Lopez next before a rematch with Garcia. Lopez would be a solid test, at 140 or 147 he's got a solid chin. He'll be bloody big at 140 and he'll be stronger than Khan and whilst he's no banger he punches hard enough to earn Khan's respect.
Watching it back, I still reckon Garcia would beat him. Khan was still reckless and got caught with a lot of hooks.
Lopez would be a decent fight, it would certainly tell us a bit more of where Khan is at. My logical preference is the Peterson rematch, my personal preference is Matthysse or Marquez fight. :yep
I'm 'sceptical' and I don't expect him to become a totally different fighter. Some simple things they could improve on are obviously how he is inside he did actually try to exchange instead of just standing there with earmuffs as previous. His balance when he punches try to stop him falling in after he flurries and also he predictability when he attacks,Khan has been too predictable in the past it's been in out,in out making him easier to time. These shouldn't be too difficult to change IMO I just always feel Khan will struggle with boxers who are willing to throw when he is,such as Garcia he's way to open.
