Great all rounded imo , Was a well rated amatuer , great nutrition and conditioning knowledge also , also practices what he preaches and puts himself through his paces step by step with his fighters , will be one of the best in years to come imo

He no doubt is an excellent strength and conditioning coach, but I have yet to see anything that puts him up there with the top technical coaches.

Booth's technical knowledge is top notch no doubt.

I would be far more confident on the technical side with someone like Dave Coldwell (who I suspect is an excellent trainer) than mcguigan.

I agree with you, I thought Billy Nelson simply because unlike Coldwell,Booth ect Nelson has has much less limited opportunities to work with top fighters working in Scotland and look what he done with Ricky Burns.
Tactically excellent and always seems to get his fighters very fit, I've said before he needs to move to England

He had plenty work as I'm sure he will tell you with the Harrisons.

Was more a general point that I have seen nothing as yet to tell me that Mcguigan is one of the top coaches. Fitness yes, but there is much more to it than that,.

From what ive seen of his corner work , he seems very accurate and very calm and composed between rounds , cant fault him yet tbh

Been saying the same thing. Very few people seemed to take that into account for some reason. When most people would have been laying on the canvas he was up fighting and still taking huge rights.

I don't get all the huge love for Virgil Hunter.
My Mum could train Andre Ward and he'd be the best, and other than that what's he done??
Gonzalez just got blasted by DeGale, Khan fought a pretty much retired Collazo but v Diaz looked awful.

I think Groves would be better looking to Freddie Roach, add more to his arsenal. Groves punch variety is lacking and I think Roacg would really sharpen up his punching, more combinations. All he ever tagged Froch with were single shots on sat, not enough to really put Carl in reverse.

Virgil trained Ward from 10 years old, no fighter is destined for greatness at the age of 10.

Exactly. Froch was literally all over the place, the only thing I wasn't sure about was how bad he actually was. I rewatched the Dirrell fight (who is/was quicker than Groves in my opinion) and although it was a tight fight, it was incomparable to how Froch dealt with his speed tothe first Groves fight. He simply wasn't with it even until the stoppage. I think Carl could probably have done an even better job in the rematch but he almost gave Groves too much respect, which allowed Groves to coast the first half of the fight and conserve energy. It would have been a nightmare had the fight gone to points as it would have been controversial again.

Personally, I think Groves ability needs to be re-accessed. There were people talking about him being the best British fighter, second best in the division and having chances against Ward etc. Fair enough, but I see a fighter who does some things well but doesn't look at all robust (chin, stamina even skin) to last at the top level.
