i gave Froch rounds 3 5 & 8 with a toss up for round 7 (groves kleading by 2 points going into the 9th), so the cards having Groves 1 point ahead were understandable to me. I'm a self-confessed Froch fan but the commentary was shockingly biased in favour of Groves, probably because he surprised everyone and we expected more from Froch.

Lets be honest here. while groves may be the next best british SMW, he did not 'dominate' Froch for more than the second half of the first round and the second round. everything from the third onwards was compettitive, though Groves got the better of it.

In the ninth at the moment the Ref stepped in I cheered, thinking it was coming, then when Groves protested and was clearly unhurt I was as pissed off as everyone else.

Froch was losing this fight but he was dominating the round. Froch did not stop the fight. Froch landed 5 or 6 unanswered shots and then the ref had seen enough.

Groves did brilliantly compared to how I expected him to do. He got lucky with the knockdown and unlucky with the stoppage. If Froch had won the 9th (which I don't think anyone would argue) then I'd have had Groves 1 point up with 3 rounds to go. 3 rounds where he was clearly sliding and where Froch was clearly taking over.

Groves did not win this fight, and absent a premature stoppage, still would not have won the fight. He did fantastically, and I would pick him over almost every other SMW in the world.

" Froch was losing this fight but he was dominating the round. Froch did not stop the fight. Froch landed 5 or 6 unanswered shots and then the ref had seen enough."

Going by that logic the fight should have been ended in the 6th.

    Good luck with that

Didn't Froch throw over 1000 punches in the Kessler II fight

As I've already posted, as a betting man, I am supremely confident that Froch threw and landed more punches than Groves.

The commentary leads me to believe that Groves had a significantly higher % of shots that landed.

I am also pretty sure that Groves punch output dropped off a cliff after round 6 and dipped to David Haye levels of about 11 per round landing.

But would love to see them.

Froch's flurries make his punch stats so impressive.

Tyson Fury is another who throws a ridiculous amount of punches in a fight. They are bizarrely not actually dissimilar fighters ...

All this rubbish about the commentary being biased for Groves i srubbish.

Froch was the matchroom golden boy and it was pretty much his home show, groves went into the lions den and for Sky commentators to admit that Froch was getting a pasting which he did for the first six rounds suggest's that was excactly what he got

Groves was winning handily for me, he was a revelation. Fouls that maybe should have been punished were not. Considering it was a world title fight, the end was wrong, we will never know the possible other outcome of the ref not jumping in so soon. The two judges cards if they were only one round up for Groves, to be level after round 9, looked really wrong to me.
I cannot remember any punch stats either. I;m not sure if it's unusual or if it was such a good fight there was more than enough going on to not need the screen flled with stats?

Ignoring Ward and ignoring Froch, Groves needs a bit of a Christmas rest and then really needs to capitalise on the momentum he has created.

Does he fight DeGale a rematch? (who is going to be waiting around also)
Does he wait on Bika? (who's fighting Dirrell, who may well win)
Does he fight a stay busy fight to maintain momentum and keep active.
Does he aim to make a big UK fight against Robert Stieglitz?

To me, Froch should deal with Groves and make a huge UK purse, he can then fight in the USA in a final fight. This makes best sense for both IMO, more so for Groves.

Bika - Dirrell - DeGale (Groves maybe will not get quick access to the WBC belt.

Stay busy fight ... who? European title, Commonwealth, British ?

Stieglitz fight, in a big UK venue, with a rematch clause in Germany if Groves wins?

:huh I'm just hoping this rivalry does not fizzle out.

no were you scoring Groves missed shots as well as his landed?

you gave Froch 1 round? (I'm guessing the 8th?) I'm not trying to pick a fight here but can you see why I gave Froch the 5th and 3rd?

good post steve. Froch didn't dominate any rounds but I gave him 3, 5 & 8 too (on second viewing). the commentary is basically just one long criticism of Froch, makes it very difficult to score impartially.
