Groves Ring IQ?

I agree, apart from when he started to lie on the ropes and let Froch unload on him.

 

Did he waste too much energy in the early rounds?

 

The only thing I believe he did wrong in that fight was go into an exchange up close with Carl, other than that I think it was a very, very exceptional performance.

 

Great performance but he could have avoided the opportunity of the ref prematurely stopping the fight by boxing from range later on. He busted up Carl on the inside early on and could have stepped out of the pocket more in rounds 8 and 9. But to be fair overall really good performance from the young man.

 

Ring IQ seems quite good... He took frochs jab away with ease and was bossing the fight, bullying froch and was the only general in the ring for the first eight rounds.

What bothers me is his willingness to trade and getting caught with shots he shouldn't really.

He is too exciting for his own good... If he chilled out and became more boring like bhop and andre ward he would maybe get in less trouble. Even for the froch KD in roundone he was almost caught by a froch uppercut coming in and then was caught when froch landed a right... But due to froch slower handspeed and groves managed to land two punches including the big right hand before froch could follow up his first punch.

 

Yes good ring IQ just needs to read opponents better and nullify especially the likes of Froch who charges in it would have been better to move back to the side and let froch miss and burn out rather than stick his gloves up pulling back

 

People seem to think George could have coasted to the finishing line.

Utter bollocks.

Two of the idiot judges had it 76-75. He had to keep fighting in the centre of the ring or they would have robbed via the scorecards rather than the bull**** stoppage.

 

I had money on Groves, I wanted him to win and have liked him for years and thought he could mix it at world level. The fight was one of the best I've seen in years and Groves fought exceptionally... but ... (and why not admit it?)...he did look like he gassed from rd 7 onwards and he did seem to be turning away from punishment a couple of times in the fight. That was what I thought at the time and as a first reaction may also be what the ref saw.

The stoppage was way too early so we'll never know, but Froch would have spent it all trying to get George out of there. Had he not done so I expect a few right hands from Groves would have closed the show the other way round.

 

I think Groves proved a lot of people wrong at the weekend and I am one of them. I think Groves is a good boxer puncher but is far from the finished product hence getting caught trading in the later rounds and gasing . Im a Froch fan but theres no denying Froch is limited as a boxer and I think the big shot in the first took a long time time to wear off enhancing the outboxing Froch suffered.

I think Groves should go stateside and work there for a while, I think Groves has a great future and training in the USA will only improve him and increase his exposure.

 

How those judges had them scores is a disgrace.

 

His Ring IQ isn't exceptional. He's better then most domestically but his lack of IQ in the ring lead to him losing on Saturday. I think early doors he does well because he's technical proficient and also he's sharp. But the more he tires the more he unravels physically and mentally.

Heart rules head with him IMO. Good fighter no doubting that but his Ring IQ isn't exceptional IMO. Good though can't say it's poor but needs to learn lessons after Saturday.

 

Excellent IQ. The way he took Froch apart was impressive to see. He is very smart and knows how to adapt, neutralise an opponents strengths and capitalise on their weaknesses.

 

Is that IQ or his ability to control himself? He lost control of himself at the end which led to the stoppage. If he kept to the game-plan, then he would have avoided the long exchanges at the end of the fight. He got suckered into Froch's fight and lost.

 

I think IMO Ring IQ is also judging a fight's path, when to do something, when not to. When to take the sting out of it.

It's all when and good when on top but when going gets tough how do you deal with situations.

Trading wildly on the ropes when his trainer claims that before the fight they had concerns about the ref isn't the smartest thing to do.

Groves had a bad habit of missing with a punch, falling out of position and throwing another. Little things like that don't show me top ring IQ. He's got good ring IQ but not top class IQ atm IMO.
