There's nothing meaningful at 170 for him after Shields. I understand he wants to protect his legacy, but losing to Silva at 185 wouldn't do anything to hurt that legacy. And if he wins, his legend grows even further.

He really has nothing to lose. He's unbeatable at welter and there are no challenges left. He'll be the smaller guy against Silva and it won't effect his legacy too much if he is to lose. However if he is to win, he will seperate himself from Silva as the best P4P and join the elite club of multiple weight world champions. If he doesn't fight him, the will always be the criticism around him that he didn't test himself as BJ Penn did. Same applies to Silva. He will be expected to fight either Rua or Jones in the near future.

Maybe because GSP doesn't think he can win.

    ^^He doesn't..

With the way Anderson Silva is fighting, GSP winning may put him ahead of Anderson P4P all time, no matter how they're careers end.

Bulking up to be a true MW is one thing, fighting Anderson Silva in you're first fight as a MW is a bad move, and doing both in less than a year is beyond dumb. He and his management know this. I'm not sure when the Shields fight is, but if he wants to move up after that, he should be making his MW debut towards the end of the year. Bisping would be a great test as he is a big MW like the champ.

I don't see GSP beating Silva until The Spider begins to slip.

That's how I see it, if GSP does plan on moving up to middleweight then he'll need at least a couple of fights to acclimate before a title shot.

C'mon Georges, a valiant defeat at 185 will not harm your legacy as much as not even trying will

'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler spent his whole career at middleweight, never having moved up.

Yes but thats a different sport. Weight is not more important in grappling in MMA. The Marvelous one didnt have to worry about a Sonnen type getting top control did he

I'm not sure where your going with this but the point of my previous post was to show that some fighters never had to deal with being pressured to move up in weight. Hagler was able to spend his whole career in a single weight division and achieve greatness but like you said, it's a different sport. Weight still plays a large factor in my opinion as I think Silva's size will be a significant factor in any future par-ups with GSP. Silva has already shown that he can be competitive at light heavy, so in essence GSP would be fighting a light heavy come fight night?

I see your point but Marv cleaned out his division and took on the best fighters who were coming up in weight to face him in SRL Duran and Tommy. GSP has cleaned out his division and beaten the best at 155 in BJ Penn already. And Frankie is barely 155 as it is and he'd out wrestlee Gray imo. As the song goes the only way is up

He's barely lost a round and the rematches would be a tough sell
