GSP to vacate UFC title!!!!

From a personal point of view I will be disappointed as I watch MMA but not wrestling, he has 0 to prove at 170 now tho but I was hoping to see him try his luck at dominating the MW division.

 

I admire him. He is clearly a man who likes competition and is hungry. He seems to realise he only lives once. At the moment 170 offers his legacy little except statistics. Personally, I would like him to become the Joe Louis of 170 MMA. However he wants a new challenge and it's an impressive one. It's not going into movies so he can chase the money, it is a real challenge that if he accomplishes will see him go down as a great combat artist not just MMA but numerous combat sports.

It would be sad to see him go but then it might open up the division as everyone starts seeing the title as a real objective. However Fitch, Koscheck and Alves aren't good enough to replace him.

Someone special needs to come through the ranks. Someone like Woodley.

Anyway, who knows. If he gets caught against Hardy, he'll make the rematch immediately.

 

A sad loss to MMA. I'd love to see him in the middleweight division. He handled Thiago Alves with ease, and Alves was the biggest welterweight I've ever seen.

 

My only fear is that all the 185 guys are 205 guys boiled down - Nate, A.Silva, W.Silva, Belfort, Bisping, Franklin etc These are all big guys not just in height and reach but also in muscle mass.

I'd like to see him try though. GSP would be a bad man if he could put one or two of those names on his resume. He should try it if he stays in MMA.

Dan Hardy! I mean, no wonder he wants to leave. I hope he can get up for that fight.

 

I think he'll decide against it, like he said he would have to dedicate alot of time and energy to it. And even if he did make it success would be another story, it would kind of suck taking all that time away if he went there and didn't succeed. However props to him for considering serving Canada(I'm Canadian) and going for a medal.

But I would certainly rather see him in mma.

 

Good luck to GSP! But Scurla, let us suppose that GSP does this and never returns to mma. Do you believe that his decision to never fight at 185 will count against him when the future generations of mma fans consider his legacy? He is considered by most (including me) to be the greatest fighter who ever fought at 170. But the fact is that a few years ago Matt Hughes was considered the greatest and the sport of mma is still very much in it's infancy! In 50 years time, how will the mma fans of the day view GSP and his career? By that time the sport of mma will have had many additional great champions, some of whom will undoubtedly be multi weight champions, how will the fans of that day consider the legacy of a great and dominant champion who refused to fight at a higher weight! Would they consider that he left the sport rather than "Move up" in weight? The man obviously does not care about such things but mma fans do. Muhammed Ali aside (Who had no weight to move "Up" to) how many serious contenders for greatest boxer ever fought at only one weight? Sorry to use boxing as an example, but it is the best I have!!

 

You have to love his competitiveness. However, I would much rather see him fight Anderson Silva before making his Olympic run. He has been wrestling for many years now though, and he is so completely right about how much different pure wrestling would be. I think that there is a very good chance that he wouldn't make it to the Olympics though. So... it's hard to tell. Although I don't know exactly how deep the Canadian Wrestling talent pool in his weight class. Good luck to him if he does try though, and I will root him on.

Drop it all he wants. It's just going to be a period of the welterweight division where we can have competition for the belt. I'm all for it, personally. Not because of any reason other than title fights are going to be more interesting now. St. Pierre, BJ Penn, Anderson Silva (when he decides to pick a division or if he wants to fight), hell even Lyoto Machida when he gets rid of the Rua question mark on his head at the moment and maybe even Brock Lesnar can dominate their divisions without anybody looking to stand a chance. St. Pierre leaving just means more competition at Welterweight, and not him beating the living **** out of everyone he goes against.

And hey, when it's all said and done, he comes back and takes the belt back, there are no losers, except Dan Hardy and the guy who's holding the title when GSP comes back.

 

I have always admired the guy and wish him well but he would quite frankly, have a better chance of winning titles in four weightclasses in UFC than getting an Olympic medal in freestyle wrestling. GSP would have difficulty even qualifying. I will not bore you all with how the qualifying process works but winning the Canadian championships does not carry an automatic birth. You have to distinguish yourself against other competitors from your geographic region of selection.

The only other way in to receive one of two at large births that are given each year. These are always reserved for special interest athletes who have essentially no business even competing with the World's best wrestlers.

In conclusion; I assume GSP will compete at 74 kg? He would have to cut another 7 pounds to make this weight. At 84 kg GSP would also have a strength disadvantage to contend with along with the obvious technical disadvantage(s).

Wel its an admirable aim but as a casual MMA fan and GSP follower I would be sad to see (or not?) his absence. Thing is 170 is dead and I think 185 may be a bridge too far.

Would love to see him move up and challenge the MW's in a Bj/Roberto Duran stylee but GSP was rocked at welter (by Serra) and his strongest asset was his take downs. Not good things to take up a weight and try against thos who gonna be near 200 lb in the ring on fight night.

Goo d luck either way but to be an MMa legend he should stay and ominate 170 for a few years.
