I rewatched this last night on Unleashed. I have to say with all honestly, it is a little disturbing and unnerving to watch how GSP manhandled Hughes. For real, Matt Hughes isn't some "striker" who got in over his head with a wrestler. Matt's bread and butter is wrestling and is known for his strength. GSP put him where ever he wanted. GSP is on top of him, Matt tries to scramble and all GSP does is grab him with his left arm and force him right back into place. wtf? atsch Has any "top fighter" ever been completely owned like this? Is GSP on something? It just seems not humanly natural for a man to be able to do this to another man without a significant weight advantage (Like Lesnar) :deal
GSP is just a freak. I'm a huge Matt Hughes fan and I remember watching they're first fight at UFC 50 watching Hughes pull out that armbar thinking to myself, I don't want Matt in there with that guy again. Even back then, you can see GSP's potential. The guy is just a stud. Fights 2 & 3 between the two were just GSP dominating that paticular matchup because of superior skills, physical gifts, & maturity. The rematch, GSP kept it standing and knocked him out. The 3rd match, GSP wanted a ground fight. It's just one of those matchups where one guy just has his way with the other. But in that 3rd fight when GSP made Hughes scream with that armbar and made Matt verbally tap, it was definately shocking to watch. I didn't enjoy that at all.
I enjoyed watching it, simply because Hughes had deliberately insulted GSP by trying to advise him, on national television (whilst in a room full of fellow fighters) on to how to escape an arm-bar (The ****ing wanker). In fact, if I remember correctly, Hughes offered to show GSP (And draw him a diagram). A case of "What goes around, comes around" if ever there was one!
Matt's Armbar vs GSP's Armbar were different. Matt's Armbar that he subbed GSP with was from a more standard position. We see that position all the time. It's a position that's easier to train for. GSP's Armbar was originally a Kimura attempt that GSP switched to an Armbar that had Hughes in an akward position. Infact it was more brut strength from GSP that snatched that Armbar. But I see what you mean about Hughes's antics. But whether he's a dick or not, Hughes is one of my idles:yep
I LOVED watching the first fight. I remember wanting Hughes to lose so bad and yeah he was such a dick to GSP. And even after GSP humbled him the rematch and was still so classy (saying Hughes is still his idol and toughest he'd faced and to keep his head up) Hughes acted like a complete ****ing tool bag douche bag when Serra stopped GSP. He looked like a little kid on christmas, such scum. He deserved what he got in both fights. All I'm saying is the extent of how GSP dominated him on the ground was shocking.
GSP is a strong dude....closest to having that kind of ****** strength @ WW is Kos who's a close second...
The guy wows me to no end. If he gets his mental preparation up there from now on I don't see him being beaten again at WW.
Some people are just freaky strong when it comes to practical strength. Get that person on an intelligent strength training and mma regime, and you get St. Pierre.
