I'm saying being a better athlete wouldn't necessarily make him a better fighter. The problem with alot of fighters is not their poor conditioning but their lack of all round skills. Yes floyd is a good athlete but watching his workouts I have never seen him do alot of the work talked about in this thread. All I see is the same type of training fighters have done for decades if not a century or more. How would being a better athlete in this threads narrow definition serve joe better against any of his prime losses? Doesn't matter about training types unless now we are going to agree that ali was a worse 'athlete' than fraizer. Also alot of the time I have seen fighters using sprints etc and cross fit type training that is how they fight. In boxing, skill is the more important attribute to have and it can be readily developed. The problem with alot of modern fighters is that they spend less time in the gym working on skills compared to their earlier counterparts. Do people seriously think a cross fit or any other athlete will simply be able to jump into a ring and throw thousands of punches without tiring. The best practice for doing this or fighting is actually fighting.
Skilled and a quality athlete > Skilled and not a good athlete. I literally cant make my point any simpler.
My point can't be more clear. If I was building a fighter they would spend their time training as elite fighters do now. 70% boxing training and 30% s and c. That's not even bringing into the equation that there is one area you cannot substantially improve by s and c and that is a fighters punch resistance. That physiological quality is not as important for alot of other athletes.
Lmao..jesus titty f*cking christ this is ridiculous. The entire thing lol You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
My point is that there is still...in the year 2014...boxers who dont have real S+C coaches. There are guys who train like its the 50s.
so many intangibles that can't be trained (ie - what do you do when you are frustrated? When you are hurt? What is your instinct to do?) that unless a guy specifically just isn't strong (Luevano comes to mind - just not an athletic guy at all) the strength and conditioning most boxers do is great for what they are doing. In no other sport do we see LESS stamina and work rate in modern athletes than in the guys boxing in the late 70s/early 80s, because bulkier muscles from strength programs translate into higher oxygen requirements over the course of 36 minutes of activity. The type of modern training with excessive resistance creates a heavier athlete with a higher oxygen need ... counterproductive two times over in boxing, but fine in short burst efforts like American Football, where the bigger and more explosive you are the more likely you are to steamroll whoever stands in front of you.
-- The injury of CrossFit trainer Kevin Ogar is sparking yet another wave of debate over the safety of the fitness craze. While performing a routine weight lifting move, the 28-year-old Colorado native was paralyzed from the waist down. He severed his spine trying to lift more than 200 pounds during a OC Throwdown fitness competition in Southern California. http://news.medill.northwestern.edu/chicago/news.aspx?id=226809 -- Where did you get the idea that boxing training hasn't evolved? Because some decide to do it still the old way? http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=261595
When you have guys like Gavin McMillan(Cottos coach), Chris Algieri among aother saying that many boxing coaches are stuck in "old school" training. When you have guys like Robert Guererro who has fought at the highest level saying things like "I never lifted weights bgecause my dad thought it would slow me down" and who couldnt do a pull up. Then I think theres still an issue among many boxers.
The problem again is that all these new advancements go away from what old school trainers were teaching !! You think Manny Steward needed to hire so many SC coaches ? Sparring ,road work ,calistetics ,and proper diet all worked ..Funny to hear Cotto's coach say that boxing training was stuck in the Stone Age yet he had. Miguel in the pool throwing punches ,Ali was doing that years ago !! The greatest fighters never needed all these advancements !! What they did was fight more frequently to refine their craft ..Guys today don't do that ..Sure they are strong but their skills take a back seat ..
Never been a world class athlete from crossfit. All it is, is high weigh high HALF reps that cheat to raise numbers. For a boxer who wasn't that great to begin with he is making a mistake
I'm no expert, but from the few minutes I watched he is doing a lot of exercises that involve posture and standing up-right. Surely this isn't a positive thing for a boxer? Definitely think S&C is not incorporated well enough into boxers training however.
S&C in boxing is stuck in the stone age, i dont understand why people dont educate themselves. And the old shtick of well Ali did it, or Hagler did it so it must work is complete horse****. People have done million of wrong and stupid thing in their lives not just training and they managed to thrive, make millions, or heal themselves or be a pro athlete at the highest level. Doesnt mean its good. Running in army boots on ****ing asphalt for 10 miles everyday and eating raw steak 2 hours before you fight is the most moronic thing you can do but hey it work for Sugar Ray right? P.S. : This isnt about Crossfit, i dont like most of it and there are million other things a boxer can do do improve his athletic abilities.
