I'm sorry, but back then Rafael never said he thought Marquez was the better one. If he changed his mind in the following months, shame on him. "So what did Marquez end up doing instead? After two meaningless mandatory fights, Marquez sat idle for 10 months and wound up going all the way to Indonesia to fight for about $32,000 against John, whose paper title rightfully belonged to Marquez. This win was no hometown decision for John. He took it to Marquez, who was warned several times for low blows before having points deducted in the 10th and 11th rounds. It's a great win for John, who also has quality victories against Derrick Gainer, Oscar Leon and Osamu Sato. For Marquez, it's a disaster and he has no one to blame but himself and his own manager."
I know people will always have different ways of judging fights and therefore the disparity in scorecards but JMM/John fight was very easy to score. There was not more than 3 rounds(at best) which John won convincingly! This fight was as easy to score as the first Holyfield/Lewis fight! It was a clear hometown decision for John:deal
I am not saying John is not good or undeserving of being considered #1 in his division, at this point in time, I think he should be the man in the FW division. From what I have read regarding the fight, Marquez deserved the decision, and not John. In all fairness, I have not watched the fight. Is it on youtube?
There is 3+ min clip of "highlights" created by some Chris John fan and even in that pro-john clip it's hard to make a case for him!
John should of lost vs Marquez. Besides 'winning' a dec against Marquez, whom has he fought??? Guerrero is working and b4 his destruction of Litzau, he fought a top 10'er in Honorio.
Roinet Caballero is miles better than Jason Litzau, just less protected. Jose Rojas (who previously drew with John, KOed Celestino Caballero and battered Genaro Garcia) was also a very good win. There's little comparison between their records. John has the better record, even if you count the Marquez fight as a loss (which, I agree with others here that John rightfully won a close fight; I wouldn't have complained if Marquez won, but I had it scored for John). Guererro himself has only fought two top-10 fighters in the weight class, and has lost to a couple of journeymen (one of which was changed to a NC), plus calling Abazi top 10 is still somewhat of a stretch. I think part of it is that Guererro is more well-known by US voters, and part of it is that they feel he's being too protected, and that dropping his ranking might give his promoters the kick in the ass they need to finally get him a fight in the US. He's been scheduled to fight in the US a couple times now, but each time the fight fell through. I'd still pick John to beat any of the current FWs, except that Luevano might be able to outbox him and Gamboa might have a puncher's chance (but he'd lose a 12 round fight at this point). In time, Linares and Gamboa should be better, but not yet.
Rojas, Gainer, Browne, Sato, Leon >Honorio, Abazi, Aiken, Litzau, Diaz That's not even mentioning losses to Salido and Diaz. Just because guys mostly fight overseas, it doesn't mean they suck.
I'm not saying Litzau is good, but can some give me some legit reasons that after beating Marquez, when was that now (2005?) on why John should still be number 1. Give me some fights and some names since then that would warrant that he should be considered the best at the weight class. I really don't know, the guy is not in North America media and even when I do read something about him and his fights I quickly forget them! People have all these rules about the Ring Title, but its imaginery, Ring magazine makes the rules and when it comes down to it, they can declare whoever they think is the best at the weight class. They clearly don't think Chris John still deserves this title.
John's recent resume isn't doing him any favours. That said, his win over JMM (which was a close fight that could go either way) is > Guerrero's whole career.
I'm hoping Gamboa takes control of this weight class, at least I'm following him. Guerrero while I've seen a couple of times seems flat footed when he boxes and really not that good, but I've never even seen John. Linares will be good too! At this point, i'm just behind the times still thinking about the good old days when Pac, Marco, Morales, and JMM fought at this weight class.
