I’ll take that. I was thinking Mike Weaver for a minute there but I’m sure he boxed longer so I went with ‘Spoon. And being that I was taking the hint as short title reigns, I was focused on 1980s guys.

I knew Frias didn’t have a super long career (but he packed a lot into it) so he seemed like a good fit.

Light heavy was a complete shot in the dark.

    Interested to see the outcomes.

    Thank you for inviting me.

    Kina Malpartida....

Funny thing: Malpartida means badly or wrongly split or cut in Spanish

So she is Kina wrongly split

OK, I’m going to take this hint about the hint and, knowing Frias was one of the three, guess the wham bam points to guys who lost their titles by first-round KO.

Again, without checking boxrec (where would be the fun in that?) …

    Heavyweight: Floyd Patterson

    Light heavy: Montell Griffin

Hint yes! Patterson, no. Griffin, yes!

    Take it home, Pat!

The Gentleman was an excellent guess, and he did have a lengthy pro run of just slightly over two decades (twenty years and eight days).

So we're looking for a HW champ that lost by KO1 and fought a few years more than even Patterson...

Not to steal @Saintpat 's thunder, but I think my next guess would be Witherspoon.

I’d have to look back but I think he was my original wrong guess.

So it’s someone who got dispatched in one, but … maybe not necessarily lost his title that way? But probably in a title fight?

Again, without the benefit of boxrec:

I think Weaver fought too long since he had that bout with Holmes at the end and started in the 1970s.

Michael Spinks surely did not fight 20+ years. And we’ve eliminated Floyd. I think Sonny started too late and died too soon.

    This narrows it down.

I’m going to take a flyer on Max Schmeling.

Clear conscience, thunder secure, wasn't Spoon. He actually clocked in at close to but not quite 24 years himself (23 years, 4 months, 15 days)

...and @Saintpat seals the deal! :yaay

Max was indeed our HW. Like the other two champs, lost his belt via KO1.

Wow. I’ll have to say I surprised myself.

But I thought Max lost the title he won from Sharkey (by DQ) in a rematch. Then lost to Joe Louis by KO 1 challenging for Joe’s title in his rematch with the Bomber.

Oi vei...probably for the best I'm handing off the reins here soon. I've been screwing up L&R since the beginning.

I've tried my level best not to make haste with these but my posting capacity is greatly reduced from days of yore, when I had jobs with lots of "hurry up and wait"/fiddle-around time and could devote it to long well-researched threads. Maybe this was too ambitious for my current schedule and caffeine-addled insomniac brain. :sisi1

Yes, of course (I say now, in despair :shakehead:) the inestimable Maximilian Adolph Otto Siegfried Schmeling was indeed the challenger in Louis II - so, hoisted by my own petard, I concur that by the rules set forth he didn't belong in that grouping to begin with. :duh

So additional kudos to you, St. Pat, for getting it despite the lack of clarity and organizational QCing. :deal:
