Still looking good at 44. Not sure who his next opponent is but from the captions it seems like he wants to fight Naoya Inoue after. This content is protected
I kinda want to see him against some of the top guys at 118 and 122. I am curious to see if Rigo can still compete with them. In theory he has the talent to become the oldest champion in boxing, or at least one of the oldest.
Still leagues above the lower tier guys, and hes on a 3 fight KO streak. There is some fight left in him. This content is protected
If only we could have seen more of this during his prime years. Every time he came forward, let his hands go, and went for the knockout he not only looked dangerous but he was sensational. Why he couldn’t do this more often I will never know. It would have saved his career and give him more opportunities for big fights that would make promoters wanting to continue working with him.
It really has been befuddling. Even in his prime he had sub par performances because he was content to just box. Back in 2019 he had an absolute war against Julio Ceja, it was amazing! A year later he completely stank out the venue against Casimero. With Rigo you can never know what you will get. He will brutally KO 3 nobodies and then in his next fight he could once again be unwilling to let his hands go.
I remember watching his fight with Ceja and thinking how entertaining he looked standing his ground for once and ended up stopping him. He also showed an exciting performance when he fought Hisashi Amagasa who dropped Rigo twice and then Rigo proceeds to win by breaking the other guys jaw. Can you imagine how much more popular he would be if he fought with grit often? It's fine to fight defensively and box on the backfoot when you need to if it's fighters that have deadly power like Donaire where he looked awesome doing it but when you have fighters that don't have a prayer who he could have easily dispatched there's really no reason to stink out the joint and force people to leave early halfway into the fight. At his best Rigo would have easily beaten guys like Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton but the problem was that he gave those fighters a reason to not have to face him due to him not only being high risk low reward but just didn't make for a good fight in general. The reason Rigo's career ended up being so underwhelming was because of his refusal to consistently put on a show and pissing people off with his abhorrent safety first style while giving other fighters an excuse to not fight him and promoters being tired of giving him chances. Still the most frustrating career of an incredible talent I've seen since Joan Guzman.
Loma would have always beaten Rigo with his style. Somehow people still refuse to give Loma props for the way he beat Rigo just on skills alone.
