new article about rigo training with roach

Wild Card Boxing Club is like a museum to a modern boxing history; numerous pictures of fighters and boxing fight posters along with motivational slogans are plastered all over different walls. Every visit I notice something new; pictures of Iron Mike Tyson, James Toney and lots of pictures of Manny in fights or in sparring. This time I noticed a sign that I have not seen before. It is not verbatim, but it says rule number 9 for training boxers – do not instruct boxers that are trained by someone else. Or as my good friend and a part time philosopher always says: “If I could just mind my own business I would have a full time job.”

While I am looking around the gym, Freddie Roach is wrapping the hands of his newest star charge that is worth mentioning, Guillermo Rigondeaux. Have you heard of him yet?

Rigondeaux is by far the most decorated amateur to defect from Cuba. With the amateur record of 243 wins and four losses, Rigondeaux, a seven time Cuban national champion, has won Olympic gold in 2000 and 2004 as a bantamweight. Southpaw boxer virtuoso has also won amateur world championships from 2001 to 2005. He was also a part of the Cuban team that won 2006 Boxing World Cup. In February of 2009 Rigondeaux has defected Cuba for the second time via Mexico. Signing a promotional contract with Arena Box Promotions, Rigondeaux turned professional and had his first fight on May 22nd in Miami against Juan Noriega. He scored a third round TKO while impressing most ringside observers. Guillermo followed it up with a first round destruction of Robert Gullien in Las Vegas on July 17th. With only two fights on his professional resume, twenty eight year old Cuban sensation is moving up in class facing a veteran fighter from Brazil, Giovanni Andrade (60-11,49KO’S) in a ten round bout on September, 18th in Miami. Setting this kind of pace and with Freddie Roach as a new coach, Rigondeaux should be fighting for a belt some time next year.

Meanwhile Freddie Roach and Guillermo are inside the squared circle doing some mitt work. Afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, which many feel was caused by his boxing career, Freddie smiles, reborn inside the ring, as he guides his new charge through a series of exercises. No English, no problems; the body language is used as they repeat a set of combinations, but then Freddie does use the interpreter to change up a routine.

Guillermo looks spectacular; his punches are precise, crisp and powerful. He moves around an unfamiliar ring as a wild cat, a lion, king of the jungle, surveying his kingdom. He has all the tools, boxing, power, movement and defense. So what could Freddie teach him? What makes Freddie such a good trainer? He smiles and puts his pupils at ease, he makes them relax and thus they are open to learn what he has to teach. Freddie does not try to mold them into one style, instead he uses the strength of his students and improves on that, thus helping them to discover the fighter within. Despite physical ailments coach Roach is in the gym every day fighting his disease the only way he knows how. His new charge, Rigondeaux is ready to be discovered by the American boxing fans. At twenty eight he is ready to move up fast. Fighting professionally as a junior featherweight I can envision some incredible battles in his future. Can you think of one? How about Juan Manuel Lopez…

Big step up. I like this. Kostya Tszyu showed how a great, mature amateur can move up quickly without wasting any time.

I like Rigondeaux but he has some room for improvement in the pro's.

He is extremely patient, which is nice, but I think he's a bit too patient, and I'd like to see how he does with a guy who really pressures him and makes him work.

thats the kind of guy that Rigondeaux will shine against. I'd like to see how he does against a guy who sitcks and moves and just wins rounds. Then Rigondeaux will HAVE to put on the pressure if he wants to win the fight.

Hey, for this being only his 3rd fight I think a 60-11 fighter is pretty good.

Has all that confusion regarding riondeauxs promoter/manager contracts been sorted out yet?
