Yan Bartelemí...... He turned out great.

And since when does what you do at the beginning stages of your career matter more then what you do at the world class level?:nut

Not every one is going to pan out, but he is been doing better lately, I'm sure out of the 15 millions pinoy boxers some of them will never make it, oh actually you just have 2 of them and one grew up in USA.

OK, Yan is the only exception. And it's only 1 boxer out of 30 or so Cubans participating at the moment... :-(

If a fighter loses to D level opponents early in his career it shows that he still has a lot to learn and to develop. It's not a dead end nor a guaranteed failure but it just looks very bad overall. Keeping an undefeated record is very important ( but it's not totally necessary ) as it tells a lot about a boxer. But there have also been many great pro Champions that have learned the hard way and learned in the process of their pro careers like Hopkins, Pac etc and turned out great ! :good

Man i thought he had the goods too. He was better technically than Gamboa. His speed was great. Power was not very good which was more than likely his downfal. I had high hopes for him.

what ever happened to that guy??

Yan's main problem is that he lacked KO power and a good beard. Well, a fighter can develop some power with a weight program but nothing can develop the chin. Yan is still fighting, and yes he was a great amateur but he is almost 31 I believe, but who knows maybe he can still surprise us. I wish him the best ... :good

He is 3-0 with 3ko since his loss, he is going to fight Avalos (18-1-15 KO) march 18. As you can c even if the Cubans don't have a beard, they don't shy away from punchers, the problem is that most of them are in a no win situation, almost every one of them has been kicking a$$ in the amateurs and they had good credentials, if they beat up on their opponents, haters will say that they fighting cab drivers, I remember Gamboa fighting De Jesus (19-2-17 KO) in his 5th fight, and a lot of haters were saying that it will b the end of the hype, Gamboa when down from a push and elbow and since then ppl has been calling him a glass jaw, even thought he is never been hurt and out of 4 KD 3 has been erroneously call, Nonito was fighting guys with losing record right until his 18 fight, but he beat up an old midget and he is ATG, Rigondeaux won a belt on his 8 fight against an ex-champ (32-2 who has a win over a prime Caballeros) and he is an amateur which bring me to this question how come an amateur with only 7 fights won against a top level fighter with 32 w and only 2 L? So the amateur has some $hit going on for him, I guess.

Good post. And that's because the Cuban amateurs are way ahead of the amateurs from other Countries in technique, school, experience and skills. So when they become pro, they just have to do a very minor adjustment unlike the others who take more time.

People can say whatever they want about Rigondeaux, but the fact is exactly what you stated that a 7-0 beginner ( yeah right ), defeated a 32-2 ex-World Champ and went 12 rounds for the first time in his career. And don't forget that he collected the WBA interim 122 pound Title, something unheard of...and Cordoba couldn't touch Rigo all night long.

I am very sure that all of these opinions will change dramatically after Rigo puts a boxing clinic against Casey, then just watch all the polls changing quick !!!!!!!!!

Garfios, I think I read that book in your avatar a long time ago... I also read another book called, " only the ball was white " in which describes all the great Black baseball players in the Black Leagues in the US and Cuba had between 130 to 170 players in those leagues!!! That just shows how much talent we have over there...

no contest. ND by KO. Donaire is proven while Rigo has yet to be tested.

Amateur experience doesn't count that much. Even Floyd lost in the amteurs.
