lol they both are going at it like amateurs here.. fairly hard round to score so far but entertaining, Calzaghe lands a nice left, lots thrown by both but not many landing clean, don't watch this if you're looking for artistry lol dirty, messy, unkempt round but Calzaghe worked him down the stretch... 9-3 Calzaghe Ye I won't be watching it again lol.. but it was far easier & more of a comfortable win for a joe (who looked sloppy & lackadaisical at times & barely looked arsed..) than I remember.. not close at all but I won't be recommending it .. but Hopkins was shut out & shut down for the most part.. Calzaghe definitely walked away at the right time..
I’ve only ever watched it once at the time and that was enough for me, same as the froch vs direll fight
Don't do it... I went back to rescore it abit ago thinking.. It can't be as bad as I remember... It is... Its like watching a couple of benders at it while one slaps the **** out of the other
Key points to remember about the fight - hopkins said before it that ‘he would never lose to a white boy’ Calzaghe gets dropped. Hopkins spoils for most of the fight. Calzaghe does the dance behind Hopkins bum. Clear ud decision for Calzaghe in a pretty boring fight mainly due to Hopkins not really engaging
I scored it wide for Calzaghe It wasnt the most exciting boxing match but I found it interesting in that Hopkins is a fighter who tends to come on strong down the stretch. Hopkins was often the stronger fighter that came on strong. Look at his fights before and after Calzaghe where he won and where he lost. even in not winning against Taylor or Dawson, Hopkins appeared to come on late where he was imo more effective, yet Calzaghe imo seemed to take away Hopkins strengths, which is what I think won him the decision. He just imo removed what Hopkins could do so well. Calzaghe was closer to the end of his career than Hopkins and I would say overall had fought the greater competition at that time. I dont think Hopkins had beaten anyone as good as Eubank or undefeated Kessler. Calzaghe had done both
Strange performance from Hopkins really, he really didn't fancy it after the first few rounds even though Joe was performing pretty subpar in comparison to Kessler or Lacy or even Bika.. joe looked like a guy who was barely arsed about being there.. just goes to show two great fighters (ageing but still..) don't necessarily make a great fight..
I watched it not that long ago and had it for Calzaghe The main thing that impressed me was Calzaghe sticking to his fight and not taking Hopkins's **** Hopkins is really good at taking the play away and getting rough and fighting inside and making guys uncomfortable and dictating the fight Every time Hopkins tried to do his thing Calzaghe would give it right back inside with flurries and wasn't afraid to get into the fray Not an entertaining fight at all but that was my main point of appreciation for Calzaghe when rewatching the fight
Hating stuff is a common past time for a lot. Is it deep resented unfulfillment, led from a frustrated life drenched in underachievements and self loathing, who knows? But hey Great thread , great write up Liquorice ....fight not o good but did show up Hopkins fun & games then his desparation when he realised it ain't workin...lols 22 grow up
I would guess it was because at the time it was the #1 LHW against the #1 SMW going up in weight and travelling to the LHW champions home country to challenge him. I would guess it was because they were 2 long running fighters who had both been involved in many title fights. Calzaghe was also getting on in years and closer to the end of his career than Hopkins Consider years later there was interest in a far younger Dawson against an older Hopkins
