Improved immensely under American trainer Eddie Townsend who trained 6 Japan World Champions. Later in his career was hampered by weight problems and would have benefited greatly by today weigh in's.
With today's weigh in Guts would have come in the ring at 150 lbs and with the extra weight be incredibly strong and a weight bully. He might not prevail against Mikey Garica and Lomanenchko but he would give them both hell.
