Was just wondering what people thought were the gutsiest performances were, win or lose. It's difficult for me to pick: Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali (either one, really) Mike Weaver vs. John Tate Evander Holyfield vs. Riddick Bowe I (Holyfield) George Foreman vs. Ron Lyle (both, but Foreman especially) Jimmy Young vs. George Foreman Larry Holmes vs. Earnie Shavers (both) Leon Spinks vs. Muhammad Ali I George Foreman vs. Joe Frazier I (Frazier) Archie Moore vs. Yvon Durelle I Matthew Saad Muhammad vs. Everybody Caveman Lee vs. John LoCicero Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Joey Maxim (Robinson) Emile Griffith vs. Benny Paret III (Griffith) Alexis Arguello vs. Alfredo Escalera I (Escalera) I know for you Benn-McClellan, LaMotta-Dauthuille II fans this list seems incomplete, but to me these were at the top. thoughts? Are my picks overrated, or just lacking some of the classics?
Hilmer Kenty took a bad beating from Sean O'Grady yet hung tough til the end. There were a ton of moments in that fight when it looked like he wouldn't last the distance, but he did. ON TOP of the fact that he was under the weather, I'd say it was a pretty damn gutsy performance in a losing effort. And he was never the same again.
Arthur Abraham vs Edison Miranda. I was never much of a fan of Abraham's but I respected his toughness. He fought hard with a broken jaw and a lot of blood loss against a brutal puncher. I remember Miranda hit him with some big shots right on that jaw and you could see Abraham cringing in pain everytime Miranda Landed.
You've NEVER watched Chacón/Limón IV? Bro, you're severely missing out. It's literally a lock for top 3 fights ever. Well worth anyone's time.
So ironic. I rewatched that last night lol. Even more ironic, Hong would quit in his first title defense against Ricardo Cardona. Although to be fair, he was cut to ribbons and taking a totally one sided beating. I don't really blame him.
i believe you on the greatness of Chacon-Lamon, and have been meaning to watch them, but for me, it will never make the top three. Trying to rank that fight above Foreman vs. Lyle, Moore-Durelle I, and Griffith-Paret III, is like believing you could fight Foreman, Shavers, and Tyson all at once, with your eyes closed, and still think you wouldn't get into much trouble, weird analogy ik, but the argument required one
I watched it today actually, about 3 hours ago. Mustered something real special to get through that second round.
Wilder getting into the ring after wearing that paralyzing ring costume. Also one that actually deserves a real mention is Johnny Owen against Pintor.
