Guys, in all honesty -- Is Danny Jacobs finished at the top level or as a fighter

Because there were fewer titles. Hagler took his titles off Minter who was far from great.

 

Minter wasn't great (and I wasn't suggesting that great fighters ever have been, or ever should be, commonplace — on the contrary, if anything, I'm alluding to the premature rush to anoint some fighters), but he was certainly a cut above the like of Daniel Congealed and Not Dazzling Darren.

 

Danny been putting on underwhelming performances. He literally cashed in on having a very close fight with GGG and he’s been living on that since then.. Even in the Canelo fight he was so uninspiring that Canelo didn’t even have to go to a second gear to coast to a 8-4 decision. As I keep pointing out Sergio Mora legitimately dropped him he fought very close with Derevyanchenko and Sulecki, he fought uninspiring vs Chavez and Arias, should have lost vs Rosado and now he did lose to Ryder.

 

Minter was a champ in the 80s. I am sure Geale etc would have managed their way to the top like Hamsho etc did.

 

Unless Geale was one of the better champions of his era then your argument doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Probably. He's been looking softer for some time now.

 

He faded against Ryder and overall didn't look good, but I still believe he won the fight. Nevertheless, he is probably finished as a top fighter. I wish he would retire. It's only going to get worse for him.

 

Hahahaha. GGG went life and death with Jacobs, Canelo easily schooled him. Levels.

 

The Hamsho who fought Hagler the first time (and even the second time) would've represented a horrible night for either of Geale or Barker.

Well, wasn't he? Golovkin aside, who was holding belts around that time? Kelly Pavlik was long done. Canelo was at 154 and yet to land in his physical prime. Dmitry Pirog was excellent, but he may as well have never existed so far as his relevance to this conversation goes — injuries took him out before he could really get involved in the mix and washed the division's most qualitatively valuable matchup away with him. Sturm was effectively done after Geale went to his turf and beat him — he would twice recapture middleweight titles, but only in highly fortuitous/questionable circumstances. Julio Jr. was handed a belt to keep warm for a while, a time during which its true incumbent was in decline — Maravilla had enough left to win his strap back from the glorified cruiserweight club fighter, but was effectively finished after their encounter. Excepting Golovkin, it's not as if there was anyone I can cite as being definitively head and shoulders above Geale/Barker at the time he/they held the IBF (and, briefly, the WBA in Geale's case). The division was such a wasteland that even tiny Cotto was able to muscle in on the action and poach a phony accomplishment. Whatever the prevailing wisdom on Geale now, HBO were hyping him as a stern test for Golovkin in 2014 and plenty of fans (albeit with a certain agenda in mind) were following suit and boosting his credentials — it's easy to scoff at such advertising in hindsight, but that's all bluster if you weren't also scoffing contemporaneously (I was, because I always considered Geale a C fighter thriving in a pitiful era).

Anyway, I just addressed it for the sake of doing so, but your point is by the bye;

I'm saying that Alan Minter was a solid grade above the likes of Daniel Geale and Darren Barker, in response to the other fellow's suggestion that Geale and Barker would've been titlists in Minter's time if the four-belt era had already been in swing back then.

Middleweight was absolute dreck in the 2010's.

 

He looked okay enough against Ryder last, in fact he seemed more inspired than his last two fights against Chavez and Rosado. He would have beaten Ryder if it wasn't for the long inactivity IMO.

I don't understand why people are slagging Jacobs in the thread. A real throwback fighter, great resume who fought the very best at middleweight, comes across as a nice guy who loves his son and family and all round great ambassador to the sport.
