Guys with at least two wins vs. ATGs who shouldn’t have

    OK, I admit it. I back-engineered a thread title to fit an interesting fact but I’m sure there are others out there.

    In 1990, 13-1 Pat Lawlor — a pedestrian-at-best middleweight out of San Francisco — won a split decision over a rapidly-declining Wilfred Benitez.

    In his next fight, in 1991, he won by TKO over Roberto Duran when ‘Hands of Stone’ retired after sustaining a shoulder injury in the sixth round. (Roberto won a rematch some years later.)

    Lawlor finished his career 23-16-1.

    Who else belongs to this club?

    Okay thought maybe Bobby Cyzz---but could not think of any two he beat. I am going with Robbie Simms { related to Hagler} beat Duran, DeWitt, Tinley and I believe a young Iran Barkley???.

    Side note------Rocky was only a journeyman fighter with a mediocre record when he headbutted Spider Rico to get the win. That said....A win in the rematch against Creed and a thumping of Hulk Hogan I believe fits your criteria...

    Doug Jones has a win against a young Bob Foster and many think he Beat a young Ali (Clay). He also has a win against Zora Folley and Bobo Olson. Not bad for a guy with a 30-10 record.

    That Spider Rico win propelled him to the upper echelon.

    He gets DQ’d there and there’s no Creed fights, no Lang, no Drago … no movies.

    He was a gatekeeper.

    Pedro Lovell, the man who played Spider Rico, was stopped by Ken Norton, lost a decision to Mike Weaver and fought Leroy Jones to a draw.

    Montell Griffin hands down. DQ win over Jones and beat James Toney twice by disputed decisions.

    On a side note, I think pretty highly of Montell. He was an undersized guy that lacked power but he made the most of his career with a high level of skill and ring smarts. I heard from an old boxing friend of mine that Montell recently retired from UPS after a long career. From what I know he worked as a UPS driver the whole time he fought. Must have a pretty good pension by now.
