But he came through the fire in this one. I wasn't convinced before but he definitively showed me something in this fight.

His chin wasn't fashioned from pure china like i had previously thought.

He came through adversity and prevailed. For that alone you have to give him respect. Sure he's not a great boxer with sublime skills but heavyweights rarely are.

But his heart came through. Ortiz gave what he could for his age but it wasn't enough and DW got the win despite being behind on the cards. He now has a bonafide top 10 win on his resume.

I'm generally still not a fan but i'm willing to give him his props.

    Well done Wilder.

His technique is worse than I thought it would still be at this point but his heart and character impressed the hell out of me.

His chin is bad if bell disnt ring he gets ko'd. He did show heart. He still lacks skill and ability.

He now has two top 10 ranked fighters. One went the distance and the other well past prime was easily outboxing him until the 10th round. Division little weak at moment so Wilder will hang around but he's not very good.

Was the fight fought on a level playing field?

I never did get why anyone would doubt him in that way. Aside from that equalizer in his gloves, his fighting heart and sheer will is the one quality in him that I've long thought was real. He will lose and get knocked out at some point, but he'll be going out fighting for dear life.

Rounds are scheduled for three minutes - if you can't put your man away, the bell will save him, you don't get indefinite time to end it once he's hurt. Wilder had a pretty long time to have to survive as badly hurt as he was and with Ortiz hammering on him.

He refused to go down, too, when it probably would've caught him a breather to do so.

He's a lot tougher and guttier than many thought.

He did show heart but his chin is bad. He wasn't even caught flush when hurt he got clipped by same punch Molina hurt him with a short left. Ortiz just didn't have enough to finish him. An explosive puncher like Aj kos him quick. But yes he showed grit and heart

They need to re-write all the boxing books

    Illustrations of the windmill
    The standing around doing nothing
    The useless jab

Then at the end of the book show the explosive righthand and windmills that will give you the victory.

    Forget footwork.

It wasn't bad enough for him to hit the deck or be taken out, even being hammered on while hurt. Is he vulnerable? Sure. But he's far from the chinniest we've seen.

He keeps defying expectations, even while hardcore flirting with confirming them. And that makes him exciting.

This was Wilders first test as a champion and the fight than allows me to actually claim him as a champion. Ortiz should have proved to everyone he wasn't a slouch and was rightly ranked top 10 by most fans. Coming out of this fight I don't change any of my previous views on Wilder except that his power is slightly less hype and carries to the top level. Other than that I think he's just as beatable as he ever was before.

For me Wilders resume gets a big boost but his H2H ability stays the same.

Which adds interest and intrigue. The masses see this clumsy, inept disaster waiting to happen, yet there's an X factor about him that keeps him winning. That's a great story.

It's not like Joshua was punch perfect from a technical standpoint against Klitschko. He flailed at Wlad and relied a lot of sheer athletic ability to beat him. And Parker looked lost in his last fight against someone who gave him a bit of movement. Historically, this division has given us Foreman and Baer, who were hardly throwing punches with textbook delivery every second of the fight.

Wilder's got flaws, but he ain't alone in that regard.
